A Lesson Before Dying: Journal Poster Project

Name ______English 1 A Lesson Before Dying: Journal Poster Project

Directions: In A Lesson Before Dying, Jefferson leaves Grant with a journal that expresses his emotions and reveals some details about his life that we wouldn't otherwise know had we not read his journal. It is your turn to create a "Journal" in the form of a poster that includes the following components ON POSTER PAPER. The design/layout of your poster is up to you!

Part 1: Words of Wisdom Letter

In A Lesson Before Dying, Grant gave Jefferson some very powerful advice about how to stand up tall with pride and dignity. These words seemed to have made all the difference in Jefferson's life. Jefferson even wrote in a journal to express himself due to his newfound belief in his own humanity. Now, it's your turn!

Write about the best piece of advice or words of wisdom you have ever received from someone. Maybe the advice came from a loved one, friend, teacher, counselor, spiritual leader/priest, etc. Perhaps the advice or words of wisdom came from a book, movie, TV show, or celebrity. How has that advice impacted you, inspired you, or influenced your decisions in life? Why did this advice/words of wisdom mean so much to you? Write a ½- 1 page letter that discusses the advice and how it has impacted you or given you inspiration in your life. Reflect on the power of these words and how you apply them in your life.

Part 2: Life Lessons from the Novel

Think about all of the life lessons that have come from the novel A Lesson Before Dying. Some of the lessons have come in the form of advice that Grant has given Jefferson, or words of wisdom from Vivian, or Tante Lou, or even Reverend Ambrose. Each character in this novel has learned a lesson of some sort from this book, and so have we as the readers. a. Make a list of THREE life lessons or pieces of advice that came from this novel. b. Briefly (3 sentences each) describe the impact of each lesson or piece of advice on the characters in the novel. How did the character(s) learn this lesson? What is the value of each lesson in the lives of the characters and for humanity as a whole? Part 3: Quotes to Live By

Choose THREE of your favorite quotes, mottos, or song lyrics that inspire you in your everyday life. Simply list the lyrics or quotes or spread them around on your poster paper. No explanation necessary. Be creative!

Part 4: Hopes & Dreams Bucket List

In the novel, Grant never had any hopes or dreams for himself, because he thought that he was powerless. In YOUR life, however, you have a great deal to look forward to.

Create a "Bucket List" of FIVE or more life goals or dreams you have for yourself. Include pictures/graphics that go along with the items mentioned on your list.

Part 5: Symbolism a. List and explain THREE symbols in the novel that were significant in the life of Jefferson. Ex- the radio. b. Include visuals of THREE objects, people, pets, etc. that symbolize who YOU are as a person. You may include actual photographs, clip art, or actual drawings.
