REVISION MATERIAL FOR MAPRE July 16-17, 2009

PART A- CLOZE TEST: Read the text below and think of the word which best fits each space. Use only ONE word in each space.

I.

The problem of traffic congestion (1) IS getting worse year by year. Motorists are (2) THE main cause, of course, and yet it is they who suffer most (3) FROM the problem. What alternatives do they have? One suggestion is that they should turn to ‘pedal power’.

For some motorists this is a realistic option but for (4) OTHERS//MANY it is much more difficult. For example, how many working people live near (5) ENOUGH to their workplace to be (6) ABLE to cycle there? And how many people have a cycle-friendly workplace with bike sheds and showers (7) SO that they can freshen up and dress appropriately in time for day’s work?

Cycling in urban areas (8)IS especially problematic. To encourage people (9) TO use their bikes, many cities now have cycle lanes alongside roads; but cyclists (10) USING them still need to face exhaust pollution. Cycle lanes can also give a false sense of security- the cyclist is always at risk, even (11)IF//WHEN he or she is wearing a helmet. Ask any motorist (12) WHAT they think about cycle lanes and they will usually tell (13) YOU that they find the road markings confusing.

In (14) SPITE of measures such as cycle lanes, intended (15) TO improve things for cyclists on busy roads, it is not surprising that for the great (16) MAJORITY of road users, the car remains the safer and easier option.

II.

Lenny Murtagh’s future (1) AS a computer entrepreneur opened up before him one day in his last year at school in the north of England. Bored in the classroom, Lenny started daydreaming (2)ABOUT a business venture. Suddenly he saw everyone around him as customers, (3) RATHER than as classmates and friends. “I realised that just about all the people in the room (4) WERE going to go to university, apart from me. That got me thinking,” says Lenny. A year later Lenny was already (5) IN charge of his own company, selling computer software designed to help university students with their studies.

Business is excellent. Lenny’s software is much in demand and Lenny’s three full-time members of staff are struggling to cope (6) WITH the workload. Lenny thinks that his youth and (7) LACK of experience have actually been an advantage, and have contributed to his success. He says “I think (8) ONE of the best things about me is that I don’t get nervous about doing anything, I just go ahead and do it. I don’t worry about the risks involved. I honestly believe that (9) IF I had gone to university and got a degree in business studies, it would (10) HAVE destroyed my creativity because I never sat down and wrote out a business plan, (11) AS one should.” III.

Some say you can do it in seven days, others promise success in 24 hours, or you may prefer to take (1)YOUR time and do it in 5 weeks. What are we talking about? Believe it (2)OR not, these periods (3)OF time refer to language learning courses that promise excellent results in less time (4) THAN it takes to say 'Bonjour'! However, the advertisements of these companies are not necessarily (5) THE best guide and if you don't know what to look (6) FOR in a good course, you could (7) BE left with little (8) than a large bill. A complaint was recently (9) MADE to a consumer rights group (10)CALLED//NAMED WhizzLearn Systems, a language school chain, and the company has been forced (11) TO remove its claim that its technique is ten times better than any (12) OTHER method. The Managing Director of WhizzLearn Systems said " (13) ALTHOUGH we still believe our claim is true, we are willing to change our advert. But the fact remains, if you spend 3 hours (14) A day for 5 weeks on our language course, you (15) WILL soon be speaking the language. What we (16) SHOULD have done was to make it clearer in the advert. Then we wouldn't (17) HAVE had these annoying complaints".
