CLASS MEETINGS Monday & Wednesday, 5:15 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., in Room 725. OFFICE HOURS Monday & Wednesday, 3:50 p.m. - 5:10 p.m., in 702G. Tuesday & Thursday, 3:00 p.m. - 5:10 p.m., in 702G. TEXTBOOK Topics in Contemporary Mathematics, 7th Edition by I. Bello & J.R. Britton Custom Edition for Harold Washington College, Houghton Mifflin Publishing Co., 2001. SUPPLIES In addition to a scientific calculator, you will need a ruler, compass, protractor and a folder to serve as your portfolio. All work should be done in pencil. COURSE DESCRIPTION Focuses on mathematical reasoning and the solving of real-life problems, rather than on routine skills and appreciation. Three or four of the following topics are studied in depth: geometry, counting techniques and probability, graph theory, game theory, linear programming, logic/set theory, mathematics of finance, mathematical modeling, and statistics. PREREQUISITES C or better in Mathematics 112, or an appropriate score on the placement test, or consent of department chairperson. ATTENDANCE Attendance is taken every class session. If you do not show up to class you may be withdrawn from the class. Also, if you miss a class, you are responsible to obtain the assignments and complete the work. Students are expected to attend class regularly, to be prepared and ready to participate, spend time studying for this class, and complete assignments on schedule. HOMEWORK Homework will be assigned every class period and it will be due at the next class meeting. Late homework is not accepted. The homework will be checked and graded either satisfactory (S) or unsatisfactory (U). Answers without explanation will not be accepted. QUIZZES AND EXAMS Unannounced quizzes will be given at any time. They will be based on the homework assignments and the lecture, and will be worth 10 points each. Missed quizzes cannot be made up. During the semester, there will be four tests and each of them will be worth a maximum of 100 points. The Final Exam must be taken by all students. A passing grade cannot be earned without it. Missed quizzes or tests will be counted as 0 points. Cheating will be dealt with harshly, e.g. an F grade. Don’t do it!

PORTFOLIO You will be asked to maintain a course portfolio that will include 4-5 projects/problem sets assigned during the semester, and any other course work of your choosing. More information about the projects will be given during the semester.

GRADING The passing grade for this course is C. Your final grade will be determined as following: Grading scale: 10% - Homework and Participation A: 90% - 100% 10% - Quizzes’ average B: 75% - 89% 20% - Portfolio C: 60% - 74% 60% - Tests D: 50% - 59% F: below 49%

SOME RULES -turn off cell phones and beepers while in class -no food or drinks in the classroom -don’t be late or leave before the class is over -students who repeatedly disrupt class will be asked to leave -please respect each other, especially when you disagree; all people’s opinions are equal in this class

I want to encourage you to see me to receive help, give feedback, or for any other reason. In cases where circumstances warrant and you want special consideration, please contact me as soon as possible, during my office hours or by emailing me. We can work together to help you to succeed in the course despite any problems you may encounter, but above all, you must be willing to spend a lot of time studying outside of class. It is my intention to give 100% in my efforts to help you, and I expect the same effort from you.
