OFFICE OF THE BISHOP DIOCESE OF MANCHESTER

Holy Week 2014 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

Pope Francis is asking Christ's disciples throughout the world to work for peace. The bombings of homes, convents,'schools and churches, the murder of Catholic Christians and non-Catholic Christians is an unthinkable horror, but it is happening to the members of our own family- our human family, our Christian family, and specifically to members of our Eastern Catholic family. Our Melkite and Maronite parishes right here in Manchester and Dover are suffering with their brothers and sisters, as well as their blood relatives overseas.

Pope Francis has said: "Wars are a concrete refusal -A CONCRETE REFUSAL - to pursue the great economic and social goals that the international community has set itself' (Pope Francis, Message for the World Day of Peace 2014). In other words, those responsible for safe livelihood of the world's people choose to defy God and man through willful acts of mayhem, murder and upheaval rather than engage in mutual efforts of peaceful development on national and international levels. Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Eastern Churches has sent a letter to us that says: "Thanks to the Good Friday Collection. . .innumerable religious families and organizations of every sort will receive a contribution with which to stay close to the poor and suffering without distinction of creed or ethnicity. Parishes will be able to keep their doors open to the needy, as will the schools...Likewise, the hospitals, clinics and other assistance centers will be able to continue helping."

As you can hear, the aim of the Good Friday Collection has changed. It is not solely for the upkeep of the shrines of the Holy Land, but for the alleviation of the suffering of the people who live within sight of those shrines. They walk where Jesus walked and now they fear that even He may have left. This is, of course, not the case. Jesus is there among His suffering people. The suffering of Our Blessed Lord on Good Friday is recalled by us today. In His Name we are asked to recall the people who are suffering in the streets where He Himself once walked as a child and as the Savior.

Please pray for peace with Pope Francis - the Pope of Peace. Please help these poor people in the name of Our Lord. And in this year's Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land, please be as generous as your means will allow.

- r
