KS1 Topic: Our School and Local Area Block B: Our Playground Learn about playgrounds with Dora the explorer. Gather information through field work, orienteering, measuring and map activities. Explore playgrounds in other parts of the world and learn a playground game. Draw pictures of your ideal playground and campaign for a playground improvement. Block B: Our Playground Main outcome: Geography [3 sessions] Other outcomes: Maths, PSHE, D&T, English
By the end of this block you will Use world maps, atlases and globes to identify the United Kingdom and have achieved the following its countries as well as the countries, continents and oceans studied at outcomes: this key stage. Use basic geographical vocabulary to refer to: key physical/human features. Use simple compass directions, locational and directional language to describe the location of features and routes on a map, use aerial photographs and plan perspectives to recognise landmarks and basic human and physical features. Devise a simple map; and use and construct basic symbols in a key. Measure and begin to record the following: lengths and heights. Generate, develop, model and communicate their ideas through drawing. Identify different influences on health and wellbeing. Give well-structured descriptions, explanations and narratives for different purposes, including for expressing feelings. Session 1 Geography and English Children will: Explore playgrounds with Dora Locate landmarks and the 7 continents on a world map Chn meet Dora the explorer. Chn will take part in a series language of engaging playground activities and field Measure and record lengths and width of the playground work. Session 3 PSHE, D&T and English Children will: Draw playgrounds with Dora Communicate design ideas bearing in mind uses and purposes of the Dora asks chn what their ideal playground playground would look like. Chn will think about Discuss the positive aspects of the playground on physical and mental creating an outside space with places to health think, learn and exercise. They will draw Express opinions about the school playground pictures of their ideal playground and present their work to the School Council for a simple change to be made.

Session 1 Provided: Information sheets covering: Children’s playgrounds from around the world & How to play Drop Scotch. You will need: Access to the internet; Dora teddy; Atlases; National Geographic map printed and copied.
Session 2 Provided: Information sheets covering: Challenge cards; Measuring recording table; Map Objects; Orienteering cards; Orienteering example; Orienteering recording table & Compass points. You will need: Access to the internet; Measuring resources: skipping ropes, ribbon, metre sticks and trundle wheels; Chalk; Compasses; Clip boards and pencils. Copies of maps of the school grounds.
Session 3 Provided: Information sheet with recording table. You will need: Access to the internet; Clipboard, pencils, pencil crayons, felt tips, A3 paper.
