Consider doubling Consider doubling up and taking up and taking Biology too Chemistry too. FAQs Who can double up in science as a freshman? Although there is ample time during a seven period day over four years to take basic level, IB and AP science classes, students who have excelled in and have a high interest in science could consider taking two science classes as freshman.
Can a student take an Advanced Placement (AP) course without taking the core course? Yes but it is NOT encouraged. A teacher recommendation is required from the student’s current science teacher and the student needs to be the type of individual who is able to read and learn outside of class so that the topics taught in the core level course can be used, when necessary, in the AP course. AP curriculum relies on a student having the basic content knowledge covered in the complimentary core course. Those basic concepts/topics/skills will not be re-taught in an AP curriculum. Therefore, a student skipping a standard level course should be able to seek help immediately when he/she does not understand.
Can my child skip Physical Science? It is highly recommended that your child does not skip physical science. While a student may take physics or chemistry later in high school to fulfill their physical science credit, the state standards have been set up so that physical science is a FOUNDATIONAL course for chemistry and physics. If your child skips this course he/she will be missing content that will not be retaught in chemistry or physics.
