MAHPERD Convention Professional Development Project

Project Description This professional development project is designed to assist physical educators in the application of the newly adopted SHAPE America National Physical Education Standards and current best practice in the field. Tracks for this project include Elementary Physical Education, Secondary Physical Education, Health Education, and Adapted Physical Education. This project includes a Pre-Convention experience designed to provide instruction in creating developmentally and instructionally appropriate learning activities, planning and implement learning experiences that are sensitive to diverse learners, management and motivate students, use of assorted media and technology for presenting lesson information, authentic assessment of students formally and informally, reflective practices, and the fostering of relationships with colleagues, parents, guardians, and the community. The opportunity for practical application of these teaching skills is provided through attendance of sessions at the MAHPERD Convention, followed by lesson design, implementation, and assessment in the PK-12 schools.

This project uses the following SHAPE America National Physical Education Standards as performance-based outcomes for students: Standard 1 - The physically literate individual demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns. Standard 2 - The physically literate individual applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies and tactics related to movement and performance. Standard 3 - The physically literate individual demonstrates the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness. Standard 4 - The physically literate individual exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others. Standard 5 - The physically literate individual recognizes the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and/or social interaction.

This course uses the following SHAPE America 2017 Initial Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) Standards as performance-based outcomes for teachers:

Standard 2: Skill-Based and Fitness-Based Competence Physical education teacher candidates are physically educated individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to demonstrate competent movement performance and health-enhancing fitness as delineated in SHAPE America's K-12 Standards Standard 3: Planning and Implementation. Physical education teacher candidates plan and implement developmentally appropriate learning experiences aligned with local, state and national standards to address the diverse needs of all students. Standard 4: Instructional Delivery and Management. Physical education teacher candidates use effective communication and pedagogical skills and strategies to enhance student engagement and learning.
