Our keynote speaker today is Jono Bacon. “Jono,” I am told this is pronounced like “Bono”, but with a J at the beginning. Jono is a nationally recognized community manager, engineering manager, consultant and author. Currently, he works as the Ubuntu Community Manager at Canonical, growing and inspiring the global Ubuntu community. In 1983 he launched the free software movement and started the development of the Ubuntu operating system, a free operating system which is freely available to use, copy and redistribute. His software is currently in use on tens of millions of computers today.

For his work in this field, Jono has received the ACM Grace Hopper Award, a MacArthur Foundation fellowship, the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s Pioneer Award, and a 10 meter swimming badge and several honorary doctorates from the University of Wolverhampton.

Jono Bacon is a prominent author and speaker on community management and best practice, most recently The Art of Community, which he has promised not to promote too heavily in today’s presentation. He swears to me that his talks are not technical. In fact, he claims that they really aren’t talks at all. In fact, his presentations are often considered beautiful pieces of performance art using the medium of dance.

So here, without any further ado, it is my pleasure to introduce Jono Bacon to kick off our conference by sharing his passion for open source software and his experience in working with open source communities around the world.

5  Keynote Introduction: Galadriel Chilton

Our keynote speaker today is Galadriel Chilton

Galadriel is the Electronic Resource Management Librarian at University of Connecticut, where she co-designed and supported an open source electronic resource management system called ERMes, that used by more than 50 institutions from around the world, such as the Loyola University Health Science Library, seven campuses of the University of Wisconsin, The Irish Research eLibrary and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Austria.

Galadriel is a strong believer in and advocate for open source in general, and especially open source for libraries. She joins us today to offer an evolutionary biologist’s study of the importance of open source projects for animal survival. The habitat she is discussing, of course, is libraries and the species which inhabits there are librarians and library staff.

In this day and age, for libraries at least, the survival of the fittest is a very real battle, so please join me in welcoming Galadriel Chilton to hear how we can not just survive, but actually thrive thanks to open source systems like Evergreen.
