Career Experience Kent School of Social Work, University of Louisville, Louisville, KY Administration Fulfill the following duties as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs:  Academic oversight over the MSSW program – coordinate academic reviews, student academic careers, plagiarism issues within the school, curriculum oversight.  In charge of CSWE accreditation for both the BSW and MSSW programs – lead curriculum reform and the creation of an outcomes assessment system. Wrote self study report.  Wrote the Kent School report to get Carnegie Classification for UofL  Coordinate teaching assignments for Kent School Faculty  Schedule classes for all semesters  Appoint and evaluate part-time faculty in collaboration with sequence chairs and program directors  Administer course evaluations every semester, analyze results and submit individual reports to faculty and Dean  Orientation activities for new students  In charge of commencement activities for graduating students  Wrote BSW proposal and provide oversight to the start of the program. Development of a Model to Assess Nonprofit Organizational Effectiveness (Mentor: Faul, A.C.; Student: McGuire, P & Gibson, L.) - $30 000 (July 2004 – June 2005) Scholarship  Developed expertise in health disparity research with the focus on older adults and diabetes through the Hartford Faculty Scholar Research project. Attended a policy workshop and presented major results to Kentucky members of the House of Representatives and Kentucky Senators in Washington. Attended an interdisciplinary communication workshop with medical practitioners, nurses and social workers to prepare appropriate messages about research.  Developed expertise in multilevel analysis as part of Hartford Faculty Scholar Research project by attending the HLM training workshop at Scientific Software International in Chicago, the 3rd International Conference in Multilevel modeling in Amsterdam and the Research intensive workshop on multilevel modeling at the Centre for Multilevel Modeling, Bristol University, England. Also successfully completed the online statistical course on Mixed Effects Models with Applications.  Developed research infrastructure for gerontology research at Kent School and secured funding for research in the field of aging from the Department of Health and Human Services, the Hartford Foundation and the New York Academy of Medicine.  Managed major research projects as principal investigator in the field of gerontology research – assessment and self-management services to older adults with chronic illnesses, multi-site evaluation of Practicum Partnership Program with inclusion of a comparison group in the evaluation, longitudinal research study on geriatric competencies of social work students entering and exiting Kent School, an evaluation of KIPDA’s home care services and emergency care services, training evaluation of home care aids provided by Jewish Vocational Services, an evaluation of the Elderserve Telecare program.  Managed a project on the evaluation of best-practice medication algorithms.  Managed a project to develop a model to assess nonprofit organizational effectiveness.  Structured the first year evaluation plan and designed the baseline measures for the evaluation of the integrated mental health training project at the Family Support Center. Became the PI on this grant after the original PI left the University.

 Part of the Kids Now Evaluation Team in collaboration with the University of Kentucky to evaluate this early childhood development initiative.  Evaluated, as part of research efforts, the effectiveness of web- assisted technology in different courses.  Completed research on the narrative description of the process to create life books for children in care. Rand Afrikaans University, Johannesburg, South Africa Service  Initiated a working relationship between the Department of Welfare and the School of Social Work for the purpose of policy studies.  Co-ordinated the clinical MA course in the Social Work Department.  Organized the visit of Prof. Hudson to South Africa and the presentation of two workshops in Johannesburg and Cape Town.  External examiner for one of Master Degree courses at the University of Port Elizabeth.  External examiner for three master dissertations, as well as one doctoral dissertation at different universities.  Lead a project of the final year social work students to develop a youth policy for the Department of Welfare as well as an Aids policy for the rural communities in South Africa.  Involved in the ASHA Assessment Project in Soweto, Johannesburg, where family profiles were analysed in different communities.  Involved in the analysis of crime statistics as part of the evaluation of the effectiveness of a community development project in the Katorus community in Johannesburg.

 Wrote ten different courses on behalf of the Department of Social Work for submission to the South African Qualifications Framework – a national accreditation body of all post-secondary education. Teaching  Taught the following courses in the Bachelors Program:  The Helping Process (1st year)  Research Methodology and Statistics (4th year)  Social Policy Development and Management (4th year)  Social Work Practice (4th year)  Technology (4th year)  Assessment in social work (4th year)  Started with a new approach to the training of social work students in statistics. The students were introduced to the procedures of data analysis with the help of computer technology.  Supervised the final year practicum course - required single subject designs and empirical social work practice as an important part of their practical placements.  Trained students in the enhancement of self-image and the treatment of relationship problems.  Rated in 1996 by the students as among the top one percent of teachers at the Rand Afrikaans University in terms of teacher’s excellence.  Asked by the Human Resource Department to develop a honors level semester course in research. Taught this course for 3 years as a guest lecturer in the Human Resource Department.  Taught the following courses in the Masters Program:  Research  Social Policy Development and Management  Practice Model Development  Clinical Assessment and Evaluation  All students (19) assigned for study guidance on master level completed their degrees with 5 distinctions being awarded.  Study guidance successfully provided to two doctorate students.  Provided study guidance to a doctoral student who received the Johanna Terburgh Award for excellent research in her field.  The Dietician Department of the University of Potchefstroom requested expert help with one of their master degree students who wanted to develop a Food Security Scale. Became the supervisor of the student.  Presented workshops in assessment and the use of measurement instruments in the helping process all over the country.  Developed and presented courses in coaching and counseling to Anglo American Human Resource Department as part of a contract between Anglo American and the Social Work Department at the University. Scholarship  The measurement instrument on social functioning that was developed as part of doctoral studies, accepted by Walmyr Publishing Company for distribution in the United States of America.

 Standardized the Gate Control Pain Management Inventory with Prof. Hudson.  Standardized the Index of Drug Involvement with Prof. Hudson.  Adapted and re-validated three of Hudson’s measurement tools for use with non-Western cultures.  Became the first South African researcher/academic whose article was accepted for publication by the widely read international journal “Social Work”.  Wrote a therapeutic program: “Action and Motivation” for the Ekoseni youth development project for youth offenders.  Developed a family profile of the youth offender’s family in order to help with the reintegration of the youth offender into his family.  Wrote an implementation document of the White Paper on Social Welfare with colleagues as part of a contract between the Department of Welfare and the Social Work Department at the University.  Written and submitted with international colleagues four articles to different international journals of which all four articles were published or accepted for publication.  Invited to write a chapter with an international colleague in the “Handbook of Empirical Social Work Practice”.  Invited to write a journal article in an issue of the Research on Social Work Practice Journal dedicated to the memory of Walter Hudson.  Five papers accepted and delivered at four different international conferences Perspective Training College, Pretoria, South Africa

 Founder of Perspective Training College for training in Functional Therapy. Main goal of College to introduce courses that would help people in the human sciences to be effective in service delivery with the necessary resources, for example measurement instruments and practical therapeutic work sheets.  The College Courses are accredited with Technikon SA.  The College was used to fund research projects that specifically dealt with scale development and scale validation.  Trained social workers, teachers and ministers to use the measurement tool on social functioning and the therapeutic program in their work.  Trained informal counselors in the use of the therapeutic programme for the enhancement of self-image.  Presented life-enrichment seminars.  Presented different courses on measurement.  Presented workshops in the use of Hudson scales as part of Empirical Social Work practice.  Took part in different radio talk shows on counselling.  Did a climate study for a big corporate organization in South Africa with different measurement tools.

 Developed two measurement instruments for a corporate organization that could help them measure specific problems in their organizations.  Developed child assessment instruments for use at the Child Protection Unit of the South African Police Services to measure the problems of traumatized children.  Did a climate study for the South African Police Services on the attitude of their employees towards transformation.  Did an assessment study on the psycho-social risk factors in the mining industry for a big mining company.  Developed and validated a behavioural wellness profile for an International Company to use as part of Employee Assistance Programs within a multi-cultural environment. Social Work Clinician in Private Practice, Pretoria, South Africa

 Established in one year a full private practice in social work.  Worked two days a week with a medical practitioner at his office. Provided counseling for stress-related problems as well as relationship problems.  Specialized in the enhancement of self-image and relationships  Worked on the development of a measurement tool that can measure social functioning as well as a therapeutic program in the enhancement of self-image.  Completed as an independent researcher a research project for the South African National Council for Alcohol and Drugs-Lowveld with the title: "An analysis of the drinking/drug habits of high school students in the Lowveld".

Human Sciences Research Council, Pretoria, South Africa  Introduced intervention design and development to the social work division.  Used intervention design and development as a methodology in the development and evaluation of a primary alcohol and drug abuse prevention program in the underserved Eersterust community.  Implemented the program in the Eersterust community as one of the few outreach programs of the HSRC. A community worker was appointed by the HSRC to help with this implementation. Acted as supervisor for the community worker.  Delivered a series of four programs for the South West Africa Broadcasting Corporation on alcohol and drug prevention.  Acted as project leader in the development and evaluation of an interdisciplinary crisis intervention program for victims of rape.  Delivered a series of six radio broadcasts on rape for the South African Broadcasting Corporation.  Selected to serve a term on the national alcohol and drug forum.  Appointed in October 1988 as Acting Centre Head of the Social Work Research Centre.
