COUNTY LEGISLATOR REPORT

County Legislator Bill Gouldman introduced himself. He said he wants to hear from the residents, he is interested in their thoughts and concerns and welcomes them to reach out at 845- 808-1020 or [email protected]. He also wanted to remind residents of the Home Energy Assistance Program. It is emergency benefits to assist eligible homeowners with their heat. They can be reached at 845-808-1500 or residents 60 and over can call the Office for the Aging at 845- 808-1700 Ext 47112. RESOLVED, that the Town Board approve the Town Board minutes of December 10, 2014 and December 17, 2014.

SCHOOL REPORT

Councilwoman Annabi announced that Right now, the High School Winter Concert is happening and tomorrow is the Board of Education Meeting. She encouraged residents to go to the meeting and to be heard; talk to the board about your concerns.

She said there was also great news at the High School. Forty new members were inducted into the National Science Honor Society. These students are taking AP Sciences classes, honors sciences classes and tutoring other students in science. They are working closely with the first and second graders and helping the fourth graders on their Science Fair projects.

Two years ago Governor Cuomo started New York STEM to acknowledge master teachers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Maria Bradfield, a Putnam Valley Middle School science teacher was honored as a STEM Master Teacher at the 2015 State of the State.

Lastly, regents exams are coming up on January 26, 29 and 30th. You can go onto the High School webpage at pvcsd.org and find your child’s schedule.

RECOGNITION BY PUTNAM VALLEY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Supervisor Tendy announced that every month the Chamber of Commerce will recognize a business at the Town Board Meeting and welcomed Gail Bennet, a member, to speak. January 21, 2015 | 42 January 21, 2015 | 43

Nino Santucci voiced his thanks. He said it is important to help local businesses in town and that nothing is more important that the support from the community. He thanked The Chamber of Commerce for their acknowledgement and said he hopes to have another twenty-seven years.

Supervisor Tendy added that the felt the Putnam Valley Market was a great asset to our Town and that he thinks every business should copy their business model. The dedication, hard work, great food and customer service are amazing. He then presented Mr. Santucci with a certificate.

AUTHORIZATION TO BID OPEN TOP CONTAINERS-BULK DROP OFF

RESOLVED, that the Town Board authorize the Facilities Manager, Susan Manno to bid Open Top Containers for the Bulk Drop Off 2015 season.

APPOINT BULK DROP OFF ATTENDANT

RESOLVED, that the Town Board appoint Daniel Gibbs as the Bulk Drop Off Attendant, as a 2015 seasonal employee for the dates of April 18, June 20, August 15 and October 17, 2015 at the rate of $13.00 per hour. Hours of employment are 8:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

AUTHORIZE SUPERVISOR TO SIGN CONTRACT WITH UNIVERSAL TELEVISION LLC

DISCUSS CONTRACT WITH PRINCETON HYDRO-RESTORATION PLAN

Councilwoman Annabi said that will be discussed this on Saturday at the district meeting. There are a lot of problems with Lake Peekskill. Princeton Hydro has proposals for them to review.

Councilman Luongo wanted to clarify why it wasn’t being signed as indicated in District Clerk Judy Travis’ memo.

Councilwoman Annabi said they were not ready to sign as they had other options to discuss on Saturday.

DISCUSSION ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A LAKE PEEKSKILL MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

Supervisor Tendy invited Roseanne Walsh and Christine Coons up. Ms. Coons said they have been active as a Lake Peekskill management committee for the last few months under the auspices of the Civic Association. She then heard that the other lakes have a more formal structure and though that would work for Lake Peekskill. She wants to bring information back to the residents and the Town Board. She added that she needed to credit Roseanne Walsh for all her research. They will be answering questions on the meeting on Saturday and want to encourage people to volunteer.

Supervisor Tendy suggested discussing it more and making a presentation on Saturday. Then get together people for the committee and next month they can formally create the committee.

Ms. Walsh added that she wants this to be fun, not a burden. They just want to be good neighbors and good friends.

RESOLVED that the Town Board appoint John LaFata and Mark Murphy as members to Lake Oscawana Management Advisory Committee (LOMAC) for the term 1/1/2015-12/31/2016.

PUBLIC COMMENT

Supervisor Tendy said this past Sunday we had a crazy ice storm and all day and all night the highway guys were out there even though it was really dangerous and cold and wet and they did an amazing job. Also, Supervisor Tendy was supposed to give an interactive lecture on Martin Luther King Kr’s letter from Birmingham Jail and the declaration of Independence and it will not be next Sunday at 1:30 at the Mahopac Public Library.

Sam Oliverio had a question regarding the new arrangement with the SPCA- he wanted to know what happens when stray dogs are taken.

Supervisor Tendy replied that they spend three days here and if they are not claimed they are taken to a shelter in Patterson until they are claimed or adopted. It is a no kill shelter.

Councilwoman Luongo said they are there 10-11 days before they decide to adopt them out.

Mr. Oliverio also wanted to piggy-back on what Supervisor Tendy said about the highway department.

Supervisor Tendy added that some people don’t understand that roads can be salted four times and there can still be ice in those conditions. January 21, 2015 | 53

Mr. Oliverio also commented that he is glad State Senator Sue Serino is going to have an office in Putnam Valley. He would love to see her office in Oregon Corners. He feels the Senior Center is off the beaten path and that there are a lot of open store-fronts in Oregon Corners. He thinks it could increase the pull of business downtown.

Kathleen McLaughlin gave a report from the library. The library is now open, but the reduced hours are still in effect. She said they ask for patience as they are still doing work upstairs. Currently, they are moving collections; they have created a teen center. Storytime will be back next Wednesday. They will also be doing Valentine Gingerbread houses on February 10th. The library will provide the “foundation” and participants needs to bring icing and decorations. If you are interested, call if you can so they have enough supplies.

Councilwoman Annabi wanted to thank the Make a Difference Clu for all their hard work helping to clean up the library after school and on Saturdays. There will be pictures and video going up onto Channel 18 and 20 soon. She also wanted to make an announcement on behelf of Town Assessor Sheryl Luongo. March 1st is the last, final and no exception deadline to file your STAR and Veterans exemption paperwork. If you have any questions please call the Assessor’s office at 845-526-2517.

Supervisor Tendy assed that this deadline is state mandated- the Town has no authority to change the date. He stressed the importance of getting proof that you filed- don’t assume it was received if you mailed it in. Call and make sure.

Matt Deceker from the Hudson Highlands Land Trust wanted to donate a book they’ve been working on for the past year and a half. The photos are of the areas they work with, including Putnam Valley. A copy was also donated to the library and the other towns in the book.

Councilman Luongo wanted to add that as good as a job as Larry and the guys do, it doesn’t take the place of common sense. Drive for the conditions and clean off your car. There are a lot of SUVs and minivans in town and the snow that comes off the top of those is not only a danger to the car driving behind you but it also falls onto the road ad refreezes. Please don’t drive with snow on your car.
