Re: Summary of Meeting with Human Resources, November 5, 2009
Cindy Frederickson, Tom Brumm and Jane Jacobson from the University Academic Advising Committee (UAAC) met with HR representatives Olga Poputnikova and Kyla Kaetzel regarding the proposed changes to the position descriptions for Academic Advisers I – IV. Prior to this meeting, UAAC had forwarded questions gathered from UAAC college representatives, the Open Meeting held on Oct. 22, 2009 and emails sent to UAAC. The following are questions gathered and responses from ISU HR representatives:
1. Will all academic advisers’ positions be reviewed or will the changes apply only to new hires?
a. If the position description changes are approved, ALL P&S academic advising positions will be reviewed and placed according to the new system.
b. Requests for reclassification that are currently on hold do not need to be resubmitted. They will be reviewed against the new criteria.
2. Will supervisors be consulted?
a. This is not a standard step in rewriting position descriptions for a series or family of jobs. However, the supervisor is given the opportunity to comment on all reclassification requests. HR considers this to be the supervisor’s “voice”.
3. Is it possible to be moved to a lower P-level if positions are reclassified according to the new descriptions?
a. Yes. However, pay will remain the same.
The issue that generated the strongest response across the campus was the level of education required for the Adviser II position. Both UAAC and HR representatives agreed that the requirement will remain bachelor’s degree and 5 years of experience. However, individual units may list Masters as a preferred qualification and screen according to that criterion. This is consistent with practices at the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa.
Next Steps: Adviser 1-4 recommendations will be reviewed by and need approval from of these groups.:
1. Human Resource Services
2. Iowa State Administration 3. Board of Regents
The estimated time line for adoption, assuming all levels approve, is July 1, 2010.
