For this activity, choose one of the following events from the book and write a Front Page News story describing the incidents using the information presented through the novel.

 The murder of Bob  The rescue of the children from the burning church  Dally’s death by the police

Requirements:

 A title and one sentence header/lead that states the big idea of the news story  An illustration  An article of at least three paragraphs that reports on the event. Remember to thoroughly explain the who, what when where, why and how of the event  Eyewitness accounts to portray various perspectives of event. (If you decide to quote witnesses remember to use quotations properly!)

Title/Header (Focus)

 Article contains a title that is focused on news story  Header is one sentence in length and briefly depicts the main idea of the news story  Title and header grab audience’s attention and focus on the big idea of the news story ____/10

News Story (Content/Voice/Style/Organization)

 Contains at least three paragraphs that describe the event in vivid detail using support from the novel.  Each paragraph contains an introductory sentence, a minimum of three supporting details, and a concluding sentence that sums up the key points of the paragraph.  Paragraphs use a varied sentence structure and variety of descriptive vocabulary to create an appropriate tone. (Remember, this is a news article so you want it to be thorough and detailed, but also engaging)  Different perspectives are depicted using eyewitness testimony, police accounts, or other sources (Greasers, Socs, etc.) ____ /20
