Course Description:

Child Development 1 addresses the knowledge, skills, attitude and behaviors associated with supporting and promoting optimal growth and development of infants and children from conception through age six. The focus is on research based nurturing and parenting practices and skills that support positive development of children. Topics include consideration of the roles, responsibilities, and challenges of parenthood: prenatal development; preparation for birth; the birth process; meeting the physical, social, emotional, intellectual, moral, and cultural growth and developmental needs of infants and children; impacts of heredity, environment, and family and societal crisis on development of the child; meeting children’s needs for food, clothing, shelter, and care giving; caring for children with special needs. Integration of the Family and Consumer Sciences student organization, Family Careers, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), greatly enhances this curriculum

Instructional Philosophy:

Students will be given challenging real-world projects and assignments typical of a successful family life and career. Students will demonstrate teamwork, leadership, and self-discipline in the completion of coursework. High quality work is expected and students will be given tutorial opportunities to meet course standards. Classroom activities will include reading, research projects, hands-on experiences meeting the physical, social, emotional, intellectual, moral, and cultural growth and development needs of infants and children. Students will be given the opportunities to earn course related certifications. Assessment methods will include written exams, tests, quizzes, projects, oral or written research projects utilizing technology.

Course Goals:

1. Identify health and safety practices and prevention procedures regarding children. 2. Analyze the conditions that impact pregnancy and prenatal development. 3. Explain the developmental domains (physical, social, emotional, intellectual, moral and cultural) of growth and development. 4. Investigate Child Development careers and employability skills. 5. Incorporate technology to collect, analyze and develop curriculum-base assignments.

Tests

 Unit test are given approximately three to five times per grading period. A comprehensive final exam will be given.

Final Exam will count as 20% of overall course grade.
