Post-doctoral position Laboratory of Clinical Infectious Diseases Division of Intramural Research National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases National Institutes of Health

A post-doctoral position is available at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, Maryland, in the Laboratory of Clinical Infectious Diseases (LCID) for the newly established Inflammation and Innate Immunity Unit (IIIU).

The group’s research is focused on cutting-edge translational immunological research in animal models and human systems with the goal to develop novel host-directed therapies for infectious diseases of global impact. Current research efforts are concentrated on inflammatory cytokine and lipid mediator networks in mice and man that influence the outcome of host resistance to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Cryptococcus species and others.

Work will be based on previous findings that identified pulmonary inflammatory monocytes and monocyte-derived DC subsets as key cellular sources of IL-1 in mice after Mtb infection and that described their regulation by interferons. Projects will explore the regulatory nature of IL-1, lipid mediators, type I IFNs and cell death pathways and how they contribute to TB pathogenesis. Experimental tuberculosis research is conducted in state of the art high containment ABL3 and BL3 facilities at NIH and overseas in clinical studies with established collaborations in South Africa and China.

Highly motivated individuals with an M.D. and/or Ph.D. in immunology, with no more than one year of previous postdoctoral experience are encouraged to apply. Experience in infectious disease animal models, cell isolations from tissue, multi-parameter flow cytometry, mass spectrometry, fluorescence imaging, molecular biology, and working in animal models would be preferred. Interested graduate students are also encouraged to inquire.
