Public Art Commission Artist Brief

Permanent Artwork commissions – 2 commissions €30,000 and €45,000

Artists are invited to submit proposals for public art projects with a permanent outcome.

Applications should specify any preferred site, the map shows suggested possible sites for permanent work, and initial design ideas or proposed approach to developing ideas. Specific sites around the Lough Lannagh complex have been identified as sites that may be of interest to artists engaging in work of this nature eg Abbot’s Castle ruin, the lake itself, the jetty. Owing to the natural beauty and scenic views (Croagh Patrick) and strong features (bridges) that already exist at Lough Lannagh, careful attention must be given to the siteing of any permanent artworks within the area. Site visits, where possible, are strongly advised. If this is not possible please refer to the map which has images of all the sites mentioned. This map is available on www.mayococo.ie under the arts service and then under the public art section. For non sculptural permanent outcomes, information regarding production and distribution of product is required.

Applications should include an outline of how community would be involved and which types of community the artist would hope to engage with throughout the process.

Timescale and budget outline should also be included; the budget should be for design, supply and installation, inclusive of all costs, VAT, insurance and other charges.

Competition Process This is a one-stage open competition. Artists will be selected on the basis of their submission.

Submissions must contain  Application form (included in information pack or accessed via www.mayococo.ie under Arts Service, public art section)  Textual description outlining the concept of the project (max. 2 A4 sheet) including any specific information requested in this brief.  Supply minimum of 2 A4 drawings or alternative expressions to communicate the content of the project. (these can be in format of maquette/Audio tape/CD /DVD)  Fully developed costing  CV and relevant examples of previous work Selection criteria Artistic Merit Quality of the concept Level of community engagement Relevance to social, physical and cultural context of the built environment Previous experience / demonstrate ability to carry out the project Value for money Clarity and practicality of the proposal

If a maquette is provided it is the artist’s responsibility to collect it after the panel have made their decision.

Selection Mayo County Council retains the right not to commission if a selection is not recommended by the judging panel.

Taispeánann an léarscáil suíomhanna féidearthacha do bhuanobair agus smaointe tosaigh deartha nó cur chuige molta d’fhorbairt smaointe. Tá suíomhanna sonracha thart ar choimpléasc Loch Lannaigh ainmnithe mar shuíomhanna a d’fhéadfadh a bheith ina n-ábhar spéise d’ealaíontóirí ag tabhairt faoi obair den chineál seo, e.g.fothrach Chaisleáin na n-Abaí, an loch é féin, an ché. De bharr áilleacht nádúrtha agus radharcra áite (Cruach Phádraig) agus gnéithe láidre atá ag Loch Lannach cheana féin, caithfear aird chúramach a thabhairt ar lonnú aon bhuanoibreacha ealaíne laistigh den cheantar. Moltar go láidir cuairteanna suíomhanna, chomh fada agus is féidir, a dhéanamh. Munar féidir seo a dhéanamh, déan tagairt don léarscáil le do thoil, ina bhfuil íomhánna na suíomhanna uilig atá luaite. Tá an léarscáil seo ar fáil ar www.mayococo.ie faoin ‘arts service’ agus ansin faoin rannóg ‘public art’. Teastaíonn faisnéis maidir le táirgeadh agus dáileadh táirge i gcás torthaí neamhdhealbhóireachta buana.
