JOB TITLE: Firefighter Program Instructor WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Exempt

REPORTS TO: Principal PAY GRADE: 187 days + 13

DEPARTMENT: Career and Technical Education DATE REVISED: May 12, 2015

PRIMARY PURPOSE: Provide students with appropriate, relevant, and skills-based learning activities to prepare them for careers as a firefighter, or related occupation. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in a global society.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education/Certification: Bachelor’s degree preferred, but not required Current licensure, federal or state (Firefighter/Paramedic) Valid Texas Teaching Credential, or eligible to qualify for a credential through an alternative teacher certification program Certification options: T&I (CTE) Firefighter degree not required, but preferred Certified Paramedic preferred/ EMT B required Certification in Health Science Technology in addition to Firefighter preferred, but not required 3-8 years recent, relevant work experience required Ability to adapt to non-traditional learning environment

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following: 1. Know and be able to demonstrate areas of interest and strength in teaching. 2. Know and be able to demonstrate areas of interest and strength as a firefighter/paramedic. 3. Establish and maintain positive contacts with community/industry partners. 4. Maintain flexibility, creativity, and energy while teaching in a dynamic non-traditional school environment. 5. Assess individual student’s level of functioning to determine needs. 6. Design and implement instructional programs to meet each student’s unique needs. 7. Demonstrate knowledge of a variety of curricula. 8. Participate in activities designed to promote teamwork and to establish a fun learning environment for parents, students, and staff. 9. Facilitate independent study for students enrolled, and document attendance. 10. Meet deadlines set for completing required paperwork. Title - 1 11. Maintain acceptable health and safety standards. 12. Participate in activities designated to promote professional growth. 13. Provide opportunities, where appropriate, for students to earn industry certifications. 14. Use appropriate technologies to strengthen and enhance the teaching and learning process. 15. Establish and take a leadership role in the development of an advisory board for the program. 16. Participate as a sponsor of a CTE student organization and competitions. 17. Organize and support summer activities for students related to the Firefighter program. 18. Observe legal mandates. 19. Other related duties as assigned.

Student Growth and Development:

1. Assist students in analyzing and improving methods and habits of study.

2. Consistently monitor student achievement through formative and summative assessments.

3. Present a positive role model for students that supports the mission of the school district.

4. Provide students with ample opportunities to engage in activities outside of the classroom.

Classroom Management and Organization:

1. Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of students.

2. Provide safety training for students and maintain documentation that the student mastered the concepts

3. Manage student behavior in the classroom and other areas as appropriate in accordance with Student Code of Conduct, board policies, administrative regulations, and/or IEP.

4. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

5. Assist in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.

Communication:

1. Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents/guardians.

2. Actively Participate as a member of the cluster advisory committee

3. Maintain a professional relationship with all supervisors, colleagues, students, parents, and community members.

4. Use appropriate and acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.

Professional Growth and Development:

Title - 2 1. Demonstrate current knowledge, understanding, and skill in the assigned content area, instructional strategies and the teaching and learning process.

2. Participate in district and campus professional development

3. Participate in required district meetings, cluster meetings and advisory meetings

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Must maintain emotional control and exercise reasoning and problem solving skills while under stress. Must demonstrate ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written). Should be able to interpret procedures and analyze data for decision- making. Frequent in-district and occasional in-state or national travel. Occasional prolonged and irregular hours. May be required to travel to an off-site facility for student skills instruction.
