Footway Works on Alexandra Terrace
Infrastructure Services are planning to carry out footway works on the pavement on Alexandra Terrace, adjacent to the school grounds. The works are programmed to start on Monday 4th December, weather permitting, and will affect the pedestrian access on the west side of the school near Union Grove. There may be a few days over which we will need to close this to carry out the work, however the pedestrian access at the east side, across the road from Philorth Avenue, will always be kept open.
During the period of the works it will affect parking on Alexandra Terrace.
Please could the work areas be avoided as much as possible during this time?

Academy competition
The Aberdeenshire GamesCon is a programming competition, where a team of pupils create a hardware and software solution to everyday problems
In the Primary competition the youngsters were given a particular software only problem to solve, for example last year was to produce a game or animation in Scratch that would promote online safety.
The challenges for Secondary students will be a little different:
Teams
A team will be made up of 4 students and preferably from a mix of year groups.
All work is extracurricular, i.e. lunchtime or before/after school club or meetings
Practical consideration for the Final at RGU
The teams will be required to perform a 5 minute presentation to judges, this will be entirely on the project, not on the personnel involved.
The teams will be expected to have a complete paper/digital documentation trail, and for example this will include meetings where ideas were generated, timelines, user and technical documentation, presentations and advertising or promotional material, with the latter preferably digital (movie or animation). The judges will want to see this record of the project, so it may be an idea to video meetings, prototypes, final product and edit these as required. This part of the project will account for 50% of marks available.
Presentations
You will be allocated about 2 hours to set up and perform final checks on your software and hardware and during this time judges will be around and will take an interest in what you are doing and may ask questions.
The teams will be allocated time to present to the judges, the presentation will include a working demonstration of the project tackled. They will listen to your presentation, and you will all be available to answer any questions.
The top three entries will be chosen and each team will then present to all of the pupils, primary and secondary, and at the end of the three presentations the pupils will vote for a winner.
The Project
Each team that enters will be given 6 micro: bit computers, these can be used as part of the solution to your project.
The source code used in your project will be written by the team, and will have the appropriate documentation to support this.
Your project will be to design a software and hardware solution to a problem that you identify. For example: You may want to show your skills at using the micro: bits to create a working traffic light system for a busy road/rail junction, and this may include sensors to detect traffic/trains.
You identify there is a need to use hardware in your exercise routines and by using the micro: bits your workouts could be tracked and appropriate messages being given to a user?
You may want to use the micro: bits to create a new musical instrument.
Any other idea you may have
The above are only examples and the final choice is down to your team, but please remember this is a project that will require you to demonstrate a hardware and software solution to the project you identify.
Details of the previous GamesCon (this was only primary schools) can be found here https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/as/gamescon/
If your school wishes to take part, please contact Jim or Susan in the Learning through Technology team by the deadline of December 15th
