Editor-in-Chief’s report (1 January to 31 December 2007) for the Scandinavian Journal of Primary Health Care

I would like to thank the editors and our Board for help and good work in 2007. Lise Stark, the editorial secretary, has done an excellent job and made life easy for me.

Milestones

Poul Brix died in 2007. He was a very important person for the development of our Journal and worked as editor of the CME section for many years. Even more importantly, he arranged the economical framework for the Journal and organised the Nordic Federation of General Practice. We loved him and miss him.

The 25th anniversary of SJPHC was celebrated with a symposium and a reception at the Nordic Congress of General Practice in Island.

Editorial group

The editorial group has changed in 2007: Irma Virjo and Heikki Luukinen have stopped. Special thanks to Irma, who has worked as the national editor of Finland for good many years. The present editors are: Annelli Sandbæk (Denmark, national editor), Thomas Drivsholm (Denmark, assistant editor), Elise Kosunen (Finland, national editor), Markku Timonen (Finland, assistant editor), Johann Sigurdsson (Iceland, national editor), Petur Petursson (Iceland, assistant editor), Anders Bærheim (Norway, national editor), Morten Lindbæk (Norway, assistant editor), Anders Håkansson (Sweden, national editor) and Cecilia Björkelund (Sweden, assistant editor).

An editorial meeting (national editors and the new co-editor from Finland) was held in Berlin in the autumn of 2007.

The Journal

In 2007 the internet version of the Journal was further developed. This version shows all articles ahead of the printed issue and has open access. The interaction with databases such as PubMed has been improved and all users of the databases will have access to the full text version of articles.

It is important to develop the interplay between the paper version and the electronic version further. There is only one version of an article (the printed), but it should be possible to deposit extra material (e.g. a film clip or extra references) on the net. In this process it may be possible to reduce the length of articles – bulky stuff can be placed on the internet – and thus enabling more articles to be printed in the paper version of the Journal.

Starting 2008 not all members of the Nordic societies will receive the paper version – but all have free access to the net version. The content will be announced by email.

Manuscript handling

Since New Year 2006 the manuscript handling has become electronic and web-based. Authors submit their manuscript at a website and all correspondence (including the review process) is taking place via the web.

The system has served us well in 2007 and has saved time and money.

Production schedule

The production schedule for 2007 has been followed. The only problem was that the paper version of issue 4 came a bit late (beginning of January 2008) in some countries (due to a delayed postal handling).

Economy

Expenses for the editorial office were kept within the budget.

Number of manuscripts

The number of manuscripts received in 2007 was 9% higher than the previous year. The increase was primarily due to an increase in the number of manuscripts from non-Nordic countries. The total acceptance/rejection rate for articles from the Nordic countries was more or less the same. Scandinavian Journal of 3 Primary Health Care

Journal impact factor (JIF)

The latest JIF (for 2006, released in the summer 2007) was 1.2. The ambition is to keep the JIF of SJPHC close to comparable journals such as British J General Practice and Family Practice (range 1- 2).

Contract with publisher

The publisher (Taylor and Francis now part of Informa Healthcare) has reorganised their business and now has office in Stockholm (moved from Oslo). We deal with new people in the production of the Journal. A few procedures needed to be reinstated, but in general things are running smoothly, and we collaborate with good people in Stockholm. Håkan Pårup is our new contact for financial and managerial matters.

The accounts for 2007 show extra revenue to NFGP compared to the budget (income from risk sharing). The contract with the publisher runs to the end of 2009. We must give the publisher notice before the end of 2008 if we want it renegotiated.
