Please join us for our April 12, 2001 Instructional Innovation Lecture. With advances in on-line learning, never before have millions of people been able increase their knowledge and education while maintaining their current family and job commitments. This series will discuss the mission and objectives of the Georgia Distance Learning Association as well as explaining its relationship to the Georgia Technology Authority. Distance learning requires an instructional process, which incorporates good teaching and learning strategies. This presentation will discuss the similarities and differences in instructional design for traditional and online courses, while giving a step by step process of instructional design strategies that will increase the value of teaching and learning in online courses.

Dr. Carla Relaford joined Georgia State University, as the Director of the Division of Distance and Distributed Learning in 1994. Dr. Relaford is responsible for directing the delivery and academic support for distance learning services at Georgia State University utilizing the Georgia Statewide Academic and Medical System (GSAMS), the PeachStar Satellite, GAST-TV broadcast channel, and the Internet. Dr. Relaford is currently the president of the Georgia Distance Learning Association and on the Board of Directors for the National Television Fixed Service Association. In the fall of 2000, Dr. Relaford received the Instructional Telecommunications Council Award for Excellence in Distance Learning.

Learning Objectives: By the conclusion of this lecture, participants should be able to: 1. Describe the mission and vision of the Georgia Distance Learning Association (GDLA) 2. List the similarities and differences in instructional design for traditional courses and online courses; and, 3. Describe instructional design strategies that will increase the value of teaching and learning in online courses.
