G3 Program Project Update 1: 06.16.2017

Please answer all of the following questions for your Project Update. If you have any specific and pressing requests, concerns, or questions, please email the GSA Sustainability Liaison at [email protected]. Budget, timeline, and any adjustments must be tracked for each project update.

1. Accomplishments

April 29th: Added a new member, Brenton Kreiger interested in developing an interface that takes in the air quality data and will analyze in MATLAB or other code. May 29th: Met with Tina Wistrom at the Oxford Tract to discuss logistics. We determined the location of the monitoring systems as well as gained key card access to the Oxford Tract in order to enable us to place our monitoring systems. May 5th: Assigned project members to different subgroups and names division directors. Alison Griffith: Communications, Sam Durkin: Construction, Bryce King: Artistic Director, Brenton Kreiger: Hardware & Data Analysis, Vania Fong: Budget & Purchasing. May 5th: Verbally committed to attending the ESW Nationals Competition in Rochester, NY. Team members planning to attend: Brooke Gemmell(Project Leader), Sam Durkin, Bryce King, and Brenton Kreiger. May 13th: Submitted an abstract for a poster presentation of the project at ESW Nationals May 17th: Purchased 2 Dylos DC1100 Laser Air Quality Monitors($399.98) and 2 Arduino Smart Citizen kits with 2 3D printed enclosures and 2 solar panels($553.35). May 19th: Had a team photoshoot to update our website May 22nd: Purchased needed construction materials from home Depot ($253.41) May 23rd: Received acceptance to participate in the Poster Presentation and Design Review at ESW Annual Conference 2015 in Rochester, NY May 1st: Began construction of the monitoring stands

2. Challenges

We had planned to use the Arduino Smart Citizen to measure CO and NO2, however we found that this product was out of stock. This resulted in a delay in purchasing, as we had to find an alternative to using this device.

We encountered significant setbacks at our construction session on March 1st. The drill we were using was inadequate and we did not have adequate work space. We constructed half of what we had hoped to. We had another construction session March 5th. This was somewhat more successful, however we are struggling to find temporary storage space for our monitor stands.

Additionally, we have realized that the data analysis and collection will be much more complicated than we initially thought. We have dedicated one of our members to research Amazon Web Services as a hosting site for recording the streaming data.

5. Metrics- Qualitative and/or Quantitative

At this time we are still analyzing the quantitative metrics. We will have finalized metrics once we complete the installation of our monitors and begin data analysis.

6. Education and Outreach materials

We have created a blog and website. Additionally we had a team photoshoot and posted photos on facebook to boost awareness for the project and G3.
