EXERCISE

The SELF Model A design conceptualized By Mary Ellen Bluntzer and Roxanna Erickson Klein

This exercise is designed to facilitate use of unconscious resources offering new possibilities for change. It is particularly useful for subjects who are stuck in a repetitive loop of problem solving.

THE SELF MODEL

The Self Model is a technique for overviewing a subject’s style of interacting with the world. People commonly have dominant ways of problem solving, sometimes at the exclusion of using other ways. Many times, the introduction of a novel approach to problem solving can jar an individual past a position of feeling stuck.

The Self Model posits that people have a common self, a higher self and a deeper self, all of which contribute to the individual's sense of who they are.

The Higher Self encompass ones Hope Faith Intuition Creative Capacity

The Common Self leans on Science Rational thinking Deductive Reasoning Logic

The Deeper Self embraces Dreams Symbols Metaphors Absence of Logic Roxanna Erickson Klein [email protected] December 2015

INTERVIEWING A PARTNER, USING THE SELF MODEL

The Purpose of the Exercise is to 1. Explore a subject's habitual responses. 2. Indirectly invite the subject to consider thinking limits of habits. 3. Seed the potential for discovering new ways of approaching a problem. 4. Harvest words, ideas, images and symbols that may become useful inviting the subject into a hypnotic trance state.

Before you Begin  The interviews will each be only about 5 minutes long  First one partner will play the role of Hypnotist, and the other is the Subject, then they will swap roles.  The Subject should "think about the problem" that they are working on, but not describe it to the Hypnotist.  Questions provided here are intended to stimulate thinking, not intended for use as a script. The hypnotist is to consider the Self Model, as questions are asked

STEPS of the EXERCISE 1. Hypnotist interviews the subject using the Self Model as a base to inquire about subjects problem solving. 2. Hypnotist notes which "self" is the dominant, and which is under-utilized. 3. Hypnotist inquires the possibility of working in an area outside of the subject’s habitual zone. 4. As the questions proceed, the Hypnotist gathers words. Ideas or images that may be useful in constructing meaningful communication with the subject. 5. Do NOT share the words ideas and images until AFTER both individuals

SAMPLE QUESTIONS "As you think about your problem ..." 1. Can you see it as a color, animal, sound ....?? 2. Does the problem carry a meaning that you can identify? 3. Can you draw a symbol that represents the problem? 4. Do you ever dream about it? 5. Are you good at taking logical steps to change the problem? 6. Have you reached out to a higher power? 7. Have you ever thought about it in an illogical way? 8. What do you currently use to help manage the problem? 9. Do you find meaning in artistic expression?
