US Nuclear Targets By Richard Fleetwood Welcome! I want to thank you for dropping in to see what we have. Rest assured that as I am able to provide updated information, I will present it here first. Yes, this data IS old. Many listed bases DON’T exist any more. I’m creating an entire website that covers this page, and it does include all the historical base closures, and where, and why. So, you don’t have to remind me that “it’s OLD”. I know. That’s why it’s now called HISTORY.. Understand that the list below was created several years ago, and is provided here AS A STARTING POINT for folks looking to see if they live in a targeted area. The possibility of all out nuclear war has dropped to a mere fraction of what it was, but the events of 9/11 at the WTC, Flight 93 in Pennsylvania, and the Pentagon resulted in the deaths of 3,016 innocent civilians, because of an act of war by Osama Bin Laden and other terrorists. This is only the first volley of future attacks on American soil. Use this resource page to get a feel for what MAKES A TARGET, whether it’s an individual terrorist, a group, or an entire nation gunning for us. Understand why they will likely select a LARGER target than just a small town, with no industrial base ( in my opinion, a very safe place to be in this day and age). Learn how to react if something big does happen where you live. Find out where you might evacuate to, or have a safe place or location in or near your home to keep your family safe. Know what kind of preparedness kit (food, water, clothes, portable radio, flashlight, etc.) to have made and/or available, JUST in case the next event DOES happen near you. Dirty bombs have become the modern fear of the Emergency Management Community. These are conventional weapons, such as Ammonium Nitrate (such as used at Oklahoma City by Timothy McVeigh), C4 (plastic explosives), or any number of high energy, NON-radioactive explosives. Adding radioactive waste (such as the sources used in old medical Xray machines, or stolen waste from any of thousands of sources around the world), makes the conventional weapon “dirty”, meaning it will produce radioactive emissions and fallout. One scenario mentioned in the past year in print news referred to an event possibility using a 12″ by 1″ diameter cobalt rod attached to a powerful plastic explosive. The effects of such a weapon in an area such as Lower Manhattan, as the article mentioned, would make the area uninhabitable for up to 70 years. This is a real threat, and can happen ANY place in this nation, at any time, without any warning. My thoughts? Have a plan. Know how to identify a threat, know where to get IMMEDIATE information ( radio, TV, cable, shortwave, CB Radio, local officials, etc.). Have a Bugout kit (backpack or duffel bag with the preparedness items mentioned above). Above all, DO NOT PANIC. What could have resulted in a death toll ten times higher (30,000 people) at the WTC was avoided because people in the towers after the attack that could leave, did so in an orderly, quick, and safe manner, helping others along the way. Also, if you are clear headed, you can help those that might not be, and the victim count afterwards could be lower, thanks to you and more folks like you. If a dirty bomb does go off, know your surroundings. Are you upwind? Get a map of your region and keep it with you at all times. Know where a fallout shelter is? If not, learn what makes a good one, or ask your EMA professional in your city or county WHERE one is located in case such an event occurs. Download ALL the fallout shelter related documents on this website and PRINT THEM OUT. It is the single best thing you could do to educate yourself in how to deal with nuclear fallout and radiation threats. Want to learn more? Recent news reports make claims that a RDD (Radiological Dispersion Device) weapon would create minimal damage, comparable to a truck bomb of conventional explosives, and would be easily cleaned up. Most professional thought about such a device includes use in downtown or metro areas, where buildings and skyscrapers would buffer and lessen the destructive zone and minimize radiological spread. There WOULD be a mess, and a LOT of decontamination, but infrastructure and training by public safety officials now take this kind of incident as a possible event, and exact and planned response would minimize casualties and long term health threats. This list was provided to me a few years ago via email, and I am not sure of the original source. However, having MANY copies of a book produced by FEMA, called RISKS AND HAZARDS-STATE BY STATE- FEMA 196 – downloadable in its entirety here, at 24 years old), a report produced in 1987 that shows both nuclear risk areas AND natural disaster zones for the entire nation (National Attack Planning Base 1990 aka NAPB-90, now 26 years old), as well as the FEMA report TR-72 High Risk Areas of the United States (not yet digitized, and 37 years old), the data contained in both seems to match up with most of the data presented here. Click above to download the entire report Nuclear Attack Planning Base 1990, released by FEMA through a Freedom of Information request that took two years to complete. This report has much more detailed maps than FEMA 196, but it is still over 26 years old.

I offer this target list to you as a simple resource to let YOU follow up on…to see if YOUR area would be a potential nuclear target. Also, see the target MAPS below the list, to give you a graphic idea of where possible danger areas could be. Finally, check out the COMMUNITY INFO AND MAPS link next to each state name, which will take you to a mirror of Bruce Beach’s Nuclear Survival website, where he has scanned in the STATE nuclear target maps and presented safety data for EACH state….in other words, much more detail, down to county level. The community groups and contact info are somewhat dated, but I will be glad to edit, add, or delete information within as I receive updates. With all that said, here is the LATEST edition of the target list… U.S. Target List…in a Full Scale Nuclear War Starting in the Fifties, when the USSR got hold of the plans for atomic weapons, and developed their own bombs, the fear of world domination and all out war with them developed into the Cold War. The Soviet strategy for nuclear war was much different than ours. For a first strike the general plan would be to send in submarine launched missiles. With a flight time of about 20 minutes to their farthest targets they could take out command and control, sub bases (where at any given time a large percentage of our missile boats are in port), SAC bases (and airports where bombers and tankers may have been dispersed ), and air bursts over our own missile fields. The air bursts would keep our own missiles from being launched while their own “silo busters” would come chugging over the North Pole from their land based ICBM’s and dig up our missile fields. The location of our missile fields was of special interest to anyone preparing to deal with possible radioactive fallout. Air bursts such as were used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki produce surprisingly little fallout compared with what would be produced by ground bursts on our missile fields and other “hard targets”. These targets and areas most likely to be hit in a nuclear exchange are divided into three categories; PRIMARY: These are mostly missile silos, bomber bases, submarine bases, and command and control centers. The enemy must neutralize these assets immediately to prevent or minimize retaliation. SECONDARY: Major military, industrial, governmental, and transportation centers. Also included are sea ports, locks and dams. These may be hit at once by the first missiles or struck by the bombers that will follow. TERTIARY: These are population and industrial centers that probably wouldn’t be hit in the first strikes but would be high on the lists for later destruction to further cripple our ability to fight a prolonged war and/or recover and function as a nation. Threats against these targets could also be used following the initial attacks to force our leadership to capitulate. In the event of a dangerous rise in tensions, military forces would be widely dispersed to make them less vulnerable to a first strike. This would make some areas more likely to be hit. Heavy bombers and stratotankers would be scattered to any civilian or military runway long enough for them to operate from. A B-52 needs about 7000 feet to take off fully loaded. An FB-111 needs about 5500 feet (the exact figures are classified). The B1 “Spirit” Stealth Bomber needs less runway, but more supporting infrastructure. This would make any runway that length a potential primary target. Also, the fact that our war planners, and the Strategic Air Command, planned on continuing war efforts with nuke bombers once the first mushroom clouds were rising, meant that any long stretch of interstate highway, county highways, or other straight and clear hard surfaces could be used for landing, refueling, and reloading more warheads on these aircraft after the first loads were dropped. Therefore, even OLD bases that have been shut down in recent years because of congressional decisions and decreased funding, would still be targets simply because they would be the first refuel/rearm points to be used. The point is that a knowledge of your particular area and it’s potential usefulness in a war situation is critical to your individual planning.

The Government created the weapons of mass destruction, and did a “little” planning on how to inform the private sector, such as with FEMA 196, but has not, in many years, made a point to give the average citizen REAL information and REAL detail…only to state publicly through mass media that “We WILL be attacked again, and again…Be Ready” … per Bush, per Ashcroft, per Cheney, per Tom Ridge…every week lately. This page exists, because ONE person, ME, saw a need to fill, that Uncle Sam would not, by bringing this info to the internet. None of this information is secret, confidential, or in any way private. It is based on published info, freely available on the web and in multitudes of published hard bound books. We do NOT do this to give the enemy, known now as “The Terrorists” (Al Queda, Extremists, the Jihadists, etc.) places to hit us…they already know what they’re going to do. We do this to give YOU, the American Citizen, a heads-up on why something USED to be a target, and may be again. YOU must decide how you will prepare, and slightly adjust YOUR lifestyle to be ready to deal with those future events that Uncle Sam literally PROMISES will occur.
