Other than its young pastor, Minister C.L. 23 Lorick, Sr., and his wife, Elease, the mission had only two 24 members, Mother Mamie Bell and Mother Florence Goodwin. It 25 quickly grew to several dozen, primarily because of the pastor’s 26 eight children and evangelism efforts on Wheeler Hill. Today, 27 membership is in the hundreds; and 28 29 Whereas, in 1967, the church purchased its first property, 1912 30 Cushman Drive, the congregation worshipping in an army barrack 31 acquired for use as a temporary sanctuary. In 1969, planning began 32 for constructing a permanent sanctuary, and in 1975 the Cushman 33 Drive worship facility was dedicated; and 34 35 Whereas, in 1979, Pastor C.L. Lorick, Sr., was elevated to the 36 office of bishop by his denomination’s leaders. At the same time, 37 his son, C.L. Lorick, Jr., was ordained to the ministry and later also 38 achieved the office of bishop and served on the Board of Bishops 39 of the United Church of Jesus Christ. Both father and son have 40 served as diocesans for the 6th Episcopal Diocese (Florida) and the 41 5th Episcopal Diocese (South Carolina), where C.L. Lorick, Jr., 42 currently serves; and

[966] 2 1 2 Whereas, after serving for thirtysix years, Bishop C.L. Lorick, Sr., 3 retired in 2001 as pastor of Rehoboth, and his son, Bishop C.L. 4 Lorick, Jr., was appointed as his successor. As with Solomon when 5 he succeeded King David, it became the son’s responsibility to 6 continue the legacy his father had built; and 7 8 Whereas, on August 29, 2009, the church dedicated its newly built 9 worship center on North Beltline Boulevard. In 1987, with the 10 donation of five acres of land by his daughter and soninlaw, Mary 11 and Marvin Bostic, Bishop Lorick, Sr., established the Beulah 12 United Mission in Williston as an extension of the Rehoboth 13 United Church ministry. Today, Beulah United Church is a fully 14 functioning ministry in the Williston area. At Rehoboth, plans are 15 currently underway to construct a church fellowship center, which 16 also will be used for community meetings, training opportunities, 17 and youth outreach; and 18 19 Whereas, Rehoboth United Church has been very active in training 20 pastors and lay leaders for ministry. Many of them have realized 21 great success through this training, with some establishing 22 churches in other cities and states. A Christcentered, familyfocused 23 church with over twentyfive focus ministries, Rehoboth’s goals 24 include spiritual growth, personal development, community 25 involvement, family enrichment, and educational pursuits. 26 Programs embrace scouting, youth mentoring, tutoring, 27 community gardening, seniorcitizen programs, financial planning, 28 and other endeavors; and 29 30 Whereas, Rehoboth United Church has been a beacon of light in 31 Columbia for fifty years, and, God willing, will continue its godly 32 heritage in many more years of worship and service. Now, 33 therefore, 34 35 Be it resolved by the Senate: 36 37 That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, 38 commend Rehoboth United Church of Columbia for a half century 39 of service to the community and extend warmest congratulations 40 on the occasion of the church’s fiftieth anniversary. 41 42 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to 43 Rehoboth United Church.
