Information Technology Department CDA RESOLUTION ____(2006) Submission of Coeur d'Alene Names to USGS

WHEREAS, The Coeur d'Alene Tribal Council has been empowered to act for an on behalf of the Coeur d'Alene Tribe pursuant to the revised Constitution and By-Laws adopted by the Coeur d'Alene Tribe by referendum November 10, 1984, and approved by the Secretary of the Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs, December 21,1984: and

WHEREAS, the Coeur d'Alene Tribe’s Geographic Information System (GIS) Program has been authorized by Coeur d'Alene Resolution 111(97) to place cultural information into the GIS; Over the past eight years the program has worked closely with the Tribal Elders to document the names of geographic features in the Coeur d'Alene Language; The GIS program has then developed a database that contains the following attributes of each site: Native Name, English Translation, History, Language, Sound Files, Video Files; and

WHEREAS, the United States Geologic Survey (USGS) maintains a national registry of geographic features called the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). The Tribal GIS Program has pursued USGS to register the Coeur d'Alene Tribal Names into GNIS database, so that the Native Names will become officially recognized; and

WHEREAS, the attached list of names has been drafted and reviewed by the Cultural Resource Program, GIS Program, Tribal Elders, Language Department, Tribal Attorney and release of these locations would not damage or jeopardize sites known to these groups; and

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Coeur d’Alene Tribal Council hereby approves the attached list of names and information to be submitted to United States Geologic Survey Geographic Names Information System staff to become part of the national registry of names.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Coeur d'Alene Tribe’s GIS Program be allowed to make the audio, video and site information available to the public via the GIS web server for these same sites.
