U.S. History Goal 4 Essential Questions/Skills

1. What factors motivated various groups to settle the Great Plains? 2. What impact did western settlement have on various groups and on the environment? 3. Identify political & economic issues that led to the rise of Populism.

The Great West and the Rise of Populism 1860s-1896) - The learner will evaluate the great westward movement and assess the impact of the agricultural revolution on the nation.

4.01 Compare and contrast the different groups of people who migrated to the West and describe the problems they experienced.  Identify the different groups of people who migrated West; trace the problems experienced by each group.  Understand the motivations of each group and how that impacted their settlement.  Relate how available transportation methods affected each different group.  Evaluate the challenges of prairie life on individual members of the family.  Evaluate the impact each group had on the area in which they settled.

4.02 Evaluate the impact that settlement in the West had upon different groups of people and the environment.  Recognize the impact of the Indian Wars and the Reservation system on the culture of the United States.  Trace the development of the Transcontinental Railroad.  Trace the development of the mining and ranching industries.  Evaluate the impact on the destruction of the buffalo on the settlement of the West.  State the contributions of various Native American leaders of this time period.

4.03 Describe the causes and effects of the financial difficulties that plagued the American farmer and trace the rise and decline of Populism.  Explain the rise of populism; understand the sources of the discontent of the farmers.  Evaluate the economic importance of the gold standard and bimetallism decision.  Trace the development of the movement for the farmers.  State the legal impact of decisions such as the Interstate Commerce Act, Munn V. Illinois, and Wabash v. Illinois.

4.04 Describe innovations in agricultural technology and business practices and assess their impact on the West.  Identify the technological advances for farming during this period.  State the impact of the technological improvements on farming.  Discuss the growing dependence on railroads for daily life.  Examine the changing nature of farming as a business.  Analyze the impact of the cooperatives movement by farmers.
