WELCOME The staff of East Elementary takes pleasure in welcoming you to our school. It is our sincere hope that your school experience at East will be filled with happiness and success.

Please remember that parents are an important part of your child’s academic success. Thank you in advance for the time you will spend working with and encouraging your child. SAFETY Several procedures are set forth to provide a safe, caring environment in which our students may learn and feel comfortable. Additionally, to insure student safety we have procedures for parents to follow when dropping-off or picking-up their child or when visiting the school. These are addressed in this supplement.

SCHOOL HOURS Students should be in the classrooms on regular school days by 8:20 a.m., on delayed start Wednesdays by 9:00 a.m. Instruction begins at 8:35 a.m. daily and 9:00 a.m. on Wednesdays. Wednesdays are delayed starts for teacher professional development. The walk-in door is open from 8:05 – 8:35 a.m. (8:35 – 8:45 a.m. on Wednesdays) and in the interest of safety, students should not arrive at school prior to that time, without prior arrangement with the principal. The valet drop-off door will be open in the mornings from 7:40 – 8:30 a.m. (7:40 – 8:45 a.m. Wednesdays). Classrooms dismiss students at 3:35 p.m. each weekday. Students should not remain in the building or on school grounds after 3:35 p.m. except under the direct supervision of a teacher or coach.

Students entering the school building after 8:35 (9:05 on Wednesdays) are tardy and must sign in at the office. If they fail to sign in when tardy and their teacher has taken attendance on time, the secretary does not know they arrived and they will be counted absent all day. In the event that a student must leave school before the end of the school day, the student must be signed out from the office by the parent/guardian and a picture ID is required.

PARKING Between the hours of 7:30-8:20 A.M. and 3:00-4:00 P.M. No cars should be driving or parking in the driveway in front of the building. Handicapped students with physical limitations are an exception.

PICK-UP/DROP-OFF Parent drop-off and pick-up will be located in the back of the building near the FEMA shelter. Please see the Parent Pick-Up Procedures on the final two pages of this handbook supplement.

Walking your child to class during the first two weeks of school is acceptable and welcomed. All parents are asked to exit the building by 8:35 a.m. in order to begin our day of learning on time.

TRANSPORTATION If any transportation changes are needed, they must be in writing or in person before 3:00 p.m. We do not accept phone calls, emails, or faxes.

*Bus drivers are appointed by the school district to provide safe and convenient transportation to and from school and for special occasions. Bus drivers will not transport a student whose conduct tends to jeopardize other students’ safety. Bus drivers are to insist on strict conformance to the bus regulations. LUNCH Parents are welcome to come to school and eat with their children. No calling in advance is necessary. Just come to the office, see the secretary to pay for lunch and sign in to get a visitors pass (ID or Volunteer Badge required). We have a table available for parents to eat with their child. We only ask that you come during your child’s lunch time so they do not lose instructional time from the classroom. Students will not be called to eat at different times, with the exception of Thanksgiving’s Family Feast.

FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM Lunch money should be placed in an envelope with the child’s name, amount enclosed, date, and the teacher’s name on the front. Parents who wish to purchase a school lunch and eat with their child must stop by the school office to receive a lunch ticket.

CLASS PARTIES The instructional program is our first priority. Class parties will be limited to a Holiday and Valentine’s Day party. Parties will normally be scheduled for the last hour of the school day. Birthday celebrations will be limited to sending a snack for the class. (Parents requesting that their child be allowed to pass out invitations to a private party should make sure that each child in the class receives an invitation.) FOOD ALLERGIES MUST BE CONSIDERED WHEN PLANNING CLASS PARTIES! Due to increasing numbers of students with food allergies, parents are required to send store-packaged foods only for parties and special events. Store-packaged foods are labeled with ingredient lists, which allow for identification of allergens such as milk, eggs, wheat, dyes, soy and nuts.

CHILD CUSTODY In most cases, when parents are divorced, both mother and father continue to have equal rights where their children are concerned. If you have a court order limiting the custody, communication or visitation rights of one parent, please bring a copy to the school office. Unless the court order is on file at your child’s school, we must provide equal rights to both parents. A copy of the order will be maintained in the student’s cumulative file. If any changes take place during the year that changes the court order, the school must be notified. GUIDANCE PROGRAM A comprehensive guidance program is provided for students. Parents may contact the counselor through the office to schedule an appointment.

STUDENT BEHAVIOR AND DISCIPLINE Maintaining an orderly classroom environment is the responsibility of the classroom teacher. Parents and teachers must work as a team to assure students are meeting behavioral expectations. Expectations for behavior and consequences for misbehavior will be addressed at the beginning of the school year and as needed throughout the year.

A student may be referred to the principal when the teacher has documented a pattern of student behavior that impedes the orderly operation of the classroom or as the result of a severe rule violation. The principal will keep a record of all disciplinary actions taken as a result of a child being sent to the office. Discipline reports to parents may be sent home with the student or mailed.

East is a Positive Behavior Supports School (PBS) EAST Tigers are respectful, responsible, and ready to learn!

East has a behavior Matrix that addresses different areas of the school and what the procedures and behaviors are for that area. Specific procedures can be seen in the posters displayed throughout the building.

General rules for student conduct in all areas of the East school are as follows: 1. Follow directions the first time they are given. 2. Respect the rights, property, and space of others. 3. Keep hands, feet, objects, etc. to yourself. 4. Use kind words in a polite voice. 5. Walk single file in the halls, and use only a library voice when talking to other students in lunch, hallways, classroom, and specials. 6. Fighting or threats of harm to others will not be tolerated. 7. I will use, clean up, and put away all materials safely and properly.

Parent Pick-Up will be located in the back of East Elementary at the FEMA shelter.

The goal of the Parent Pick-Up Program is to provide a safe, convenient departure for students and parents after school. East Elementary staff members will supervise students until they are dismissed to the proper vehicle or adult with a Parent Pick-Up card. Dismissal of students will begin at 3:35 p.m. All students need to be picked up no later than 3:45 p.m.

Each parent/guardian will receive two complimentary Parent Pick-Up cards. If you lose a card or need extras we will gladly make them for $1 per sheet (two to a sheet).

We appreciate your cooperation in using the following procedures when picking up your student(s) at dismissal time. Please note that there are two ways you can use Parent Pick-Up: Vehicle Parent Pick-Up or Walk-Up Parent Pick-Up.

Vehicle Pick-Up Procedures:

1. Pull your vehicle all the way around the parking lot following the arrows. Vehicles will make a line along the parking lot. 2. When merging, please take turns and be respectful of the other parents. 3. Please have your Parent Pick-Up card visible at all times. This helps to ensure that an approved person is picking up students and will allow students to be called in a timely manner. Please be advised, we will not dismiss without this card. If you have forgotten the card, you will need to park in a parking space near the playground and come into the building through Exit K, near the fence to have your photo ID checked by a staff member, who will reference eSchoolPlus. 4. Your student(s) will be sent to a cone and assisted by staff to get in the vehicle. They may check for a photo ID periodically. Students MUST get into the PASSENGER side of the vehicle for safety purposes. 5. Remain in a single file line and watch our staff members for direction. You may need to pull into a parking space if your student is not ready to load into the vehicle. 6. Please plan ahead if you will vary from your normal routine during dismissal. Remember that it is district policy that any transportation changes must be done in writing or in person. These changes must be in the East office no later than 3:00 on the day of the transportation change.

Face-To-Face Pick-Up Procedures:

If you are a parent that parks and walks to pick up your student(s) you will be entering through exit K, located next to the fence. Please have your Parent Pick-Up card with you, as we will not release students without this card. If you have forgotten your card, you will need to have your photo ID ready to be checked in eSchoolPlus. We know that Parent Pick-Up requires patience and we appreciate that. Our staff is responsible for getting at least 150 children home safely through this system. Please help ensure the safety of all students, parents, and staff by adhering to these procedures.
