“If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing well.” - Eric Liddel

Teacher Information: Teacher: Alisha Wallace School Phone: 405.356.2533 Planning Period: 1:10 – 1:55 E-mail: [email protected]

Purposes of Art: 1. To understand and apply visual art terms. 2. To understand the development of art on historical levels. 3. To understand and employ a variety of media in creative ways. 4. To understand and appreciate art as a means of communication. 5. To understand and develop a work ethic which will be valuable in all facets of life.

Materials:  Pencil (not mechanical)  2 Black Pens  8X10 Sketchbook (or pocket folder with blank copy paper – no lined paper)  1 black Sharpie  Optional: Scissors, Ruler, Crayola Markers, Crayola Colored Pencils, 2 paintbrushes (different sizes)

Course Policies:  Classroom Rules: o Recognize everyone is a person – treat them as such. o Take responsibility for yourself – know what is expected of you and then do it. o Complete every job to the best of your ability – no task is too small for your effort.

In other words, do nothing that interferes with another’s opportunity to learn and my responsibility to teach – if you are sent from the classroom, you will receive a grade reduction for the day’s assignment.

 Discipline: Any behavior that takes away from the learning atmosphere will be handled with the following discipline plan: o Student-Teacher Conference o Parental Involvement o Referral to the Principal

 Classroom Responsibilities: o Be in your seat and ready for class when the bell rings. o Bring your pencil/pen, sketchbook/notebook, and library book every day. o Turn off cell phones before class starts – if I see OR hear a phone, it has the right to become mine. o No candy (including gum), food, or drinks are allowed in the classroom. The one exception is a water bottle with a lid. o Make-up work from an excused absence is YOUR responsibility. Late work follows the guidelines provided below. Realize, no extra credit will be provided during this course. o Classroom Announcements – remain seated and quiet…you may not care to hear the announcements, but please be considerate of your peers. o Only leave the room when absolutely necessary. If the teacher deems your requests as too frequent or inappropriate, you will be counted tardy – you were not prepared for class on time. o Sharpen pencils before class begins or after teacher instruction is complete. If forgotten, you may exchange something of value with the teacher for a pencil. When you return the pencil, your valuable will be returned to you. o Questions are the student’s responsibility. During instruction, wait for the teacher to ask for questions or raise your hand and wait to be recognized. During studio time, 1) refer to rubric, 2) ask a neighbor for help, 3) ask teacher for help. o Always, always return supplies to their appropriate location (I realize this may not be where you found them). o Turn in assignments to the orange crate. Name and date should be clearly marked on both the project and the attached rubric. If your name is not on your project it is not your project. Again, if the rubric is not attached to the project, your project is not complete and will therefore be graded as late work. o Should you finish an assignment early and there are no new assignments, you may read, sketch, or do homework until dismissal. Be prepared for this possibility when you come to class (1 bathroom pass) – doing nothing is not an option (respect time) and will be reflected on your grade. o The teacher dismisses, not the bell. Be seated and wait for the teacher to tell you to “Have a great day!” o Only in extreme circumstances will I be absent or away from the room. However, you are responsible for your actions and I expect you to behave as if I were present. Do not allow my distance to lull you into a false sense of security!

 Grading: Assignments will be graded on a points possible basis. These points will be explained in a rubric. A rubric is simply an explanation of the grade expectations for each project. (These will serve as a major help to you the student.) The rubric is distributed at the beginning of each project and is to be attached to each completed project for grading. If lost, the student is responsible for getting a rubric from the orange box on the table by the door. Projects turned in without a rubric will receive a late grade. Grades will be averaged a minimum of once per week. Progress reports will be sent or mailed home every three weeks. However, students and parents are encouraged to view grades online weekly. o Notes will be checked periodically throughout the 9 weeks. No late grades will be accepted. Date order, legibility, and completeness are all expected. Realize, notes are not for the teacher, but for your benefit. If you are absent, make up the work (get it from a responsible neighbor). Not only will this benefit your grade, but it will also serve as a study guide for quizzes and tests. o Sketchbooks – will be considered as homework. Sketchbooks should be used as investigation for class projects and assigned drawings should take a minimum of 30 minutes per week. Try to get a 8X10 sketchbook without lines so you will have room to create. Assigned sketchbooks for the semester are posted by the cubbies. These will be turned in each Tuesday at the beginning of the class period. o Studio projects will vary in time length and points possible as described in the rubric before each assignment. When classroom time proves inadequate for completing a project to the best of a student’s ability, the student is welcome to come in outside of the class hour to complete the project. Please inform the teacher so arrangements may be made. o Quizzes are for your benefit. Quizzes allow you to recognize concepts you have grasped, as well as what still needs work before a test. o Questions regarding grades may be made in a timely manner before/after school, Tiger Time, or at lunch. Class time is not appropriate for grade discussion – it is your personal grade.

 Late Work: Late work is accepted only 3 days after the due date. Also realize, late work will NOT be eligible for full credit. 1 day late = 1 letter grade, 2 days late = 2 letter grades, 3 days late = 3 letter grades, 4 days late = not accepted

 Class Attendance: A student who is not in the classroom loses opportunity to maximize learning from the teacher and fellow peers. When a student is absent for any reason, it is the student’s responsibility to ask for the work that was missed. The student then has one day for each day gone (if absence was excused) to complete the work, which is the Student Handbook policy. However, if the assignment was scheduled before the student’s absence, that student will be responsible upon their return. (For example, if a student is informed of a test scheduled for Friday on Monday, but is absent on Thursday of the same week, that student is responsible for the Friday test as originally scheduled, minus any new information taught on Thursday.)

If you need any special accommodations, such as being seated near the board, have questions regarding clarity on assignments or procedures, or need into the room for extra work time in order to have a project completed on time, please, come see me. I will be in my room before each school day begins and after each school day ends. You are always welcome to come in during Tiger Time and lunch to work. The one exception to this opportunity is Wednesday, because I am on duty outside of my classroom.

I am here to help you learn!
