Directions: You were given a crucial assignment by the owner of the paper (she is right she doesn’t pay well and doesn’t give enough time, but alas I am here to help with the time. I don’t pay well either so don’t go there.) As we all know our side of the war needs a confidence boost, and it is your job to write a passionate article that will persuade even a traitor to our cause. Since this task, set by the owner, also needs to be turned into your journalism professor, you will need to make two copies of your articles.

Journalism Class Criteria for task: 1. Get published 2. Charge owner of the paper a plethora of money 3. Tell owner that diet coke needs to be invented 4. Sign up for Professor Brooks’ next class on Literature and the Constitution.

You want the official criteria. Ohhhh all right, I suppose I can be on task. You take all my fun away. 

1. You need to fill out your outline and attach it to your rough draft. 2. You need to turn in your edited rough draft with your final draft. 3. You need to staple the following items together prior to turning them in. a. rubric (on top) b. final draft (in the middle) c. rough draft (on the bottom) 4. Ideas and Content a. Must show vs. tells b. Must be a small enough topic to handle c. Writer must demonstrate insight into the topic and use depth and complexity (ie. Perspectives, ethics, etc.) Also you must highlight your depth and complexity on both your rough draft and final draft. d. Writing is interesting.

5. Organization a. Catchy beginning that begins with a fact that supports your opinion. b. Must contain opinions that are supported by facts. c. All details are in the right place 1. Give a pt. to the other side but refute it right away 2. Other side’s opinion is buried in the middle 3. Don’t make it the other side’s main pt. d. Has a definite ending that reminds the reader of your opinion and calls to action (the call to action might be something subtle like the reader needs to think about it) 6. Voice a. Personal stamp on this paper (I will know if it is written by a Patriot or a Loyalist) b. Passionate about your opinion and you help the reader feel the same way. c. Not afraid to express what you think d. Should appear that you are talking directly to the reader.
