JUNE 2009 SPECIAL SEMINAR AND SHOW WITH LIVE BAND - OKBARI Saturday, June 27, 2009 Sponsored by Habeeba’s and Laylia

Join us for an opportunity we rarely have – to dance with a live band in Columbus! On Saturday, June 27, 2009 Habeeba’s Bellydancing and Laylia are sponsoring OKBARI! Okbari performs Ottoman classical and Turkish contemporary art music along with works from the Armenian and Anatolian folk traditions. Okbari also presents Arabic folk and classical music as well as traditional songs from Greece and the Balkans. Okbari has released five albums since they formed in 1995, and play widely throughout the Northeast.

The festivities will start at 5:30 with a seminar on playing darkbuka (doumbek, tabla) which will be about learning Arabic hand drum techniques as well as popular rhythms with Eric LaPerna. Great for musicians or bellydancers!

At 6:30, Amos Libby will introduce dancers to the concept of makam (“maqam”) in Arabic or modal theory in Turkish and Arabic music.

At 8:00 there will be a show with professionals dancing as Okbari plays! After the show there will be a period of open dance where all dancers may get up and dance with the band. Prices Workshop $20.00 Do not miss this rare opportunity! Show $10.00
