URBAN DEVELOPMENT MODULE III: FREQUENCY OF WALKING IN NEIGHBOURHOOD

MODULE INFORMATION

PURPOSE OF THE MODULE:

To address or inform a requirement related to the Built Environment in the Ontario Public Health Standards 2008, within the Chronic Diseases and Injuries Program Standards.

Requirement 6. The board of health shall work with municipalities to support healthy public policies and the creation or enhancement of supportive environments in recreational settings and the built environment regarding the following topics:  Healthy eating;  Healthy weights;  Comprehensive tobacco control;  Physical activity;  Alcohol use; and  Exposure to ultraviolet radiation.

PERCEPTION OF CURRENT NEIGHBOURHOOD AS A PLACE TO WALK FOR LEISURE

INDICATOR DESCRIPTION:

% of adults (18+ years) who spend a selected amount of time, in a typical week, walking around their neighbourhood either for fun and exercise, or to go from place to place.

INDICATOR OBJECTIVES: To address or inform a requirement related to the Built Environment in the Ontario Public Health Standards 2008, within the Chronic Diseases and Injuries Program Standards.

To provide additional context for the results of the Urban Development II: Importance of Walking Distance from Home module (i.e. as a variable to cross-tab).

ANALYSIS CHECK LIST: Include adults 18+ in the denominator.

METHOD OF CALCULATION:

# adults (18+) who report they spend time walking around their neighbourhood either for fun and exercise, or to go from place to place (urbwalk_1= 2 OR urbwalk_1 = 3 OR urbwalk_1 = 4 OR urbwalk_1 = 5 OR urbwalk_1 = 6) all adults (18+)
