FP7 Project “Advanced Computing for Innovation” (AComIn)

WORK PROGRAM

Prof. Darina Dicheva Winston-Salem State University, Winston Salem, NC, USA http://myweb.wssu.edu/dichevad/ June 09 – July 08, 2014

This work program is related to WP1: Strengthening the IICT-BAS Human Potential of the FP7-REGPOT-2012-2013-1 Project “Advanced Computing for Innovation” (AComIn). The planned activities are under the project topic “Language and Semantic Technologies” focusing on the IT challenges in developing and using educational digital repositories as well as semantic and game techniques for supporting educational systems.

The local hosts are Prof. Gennady Agre and Prof. Galia Angelova.

The work program includes the following interrelated activities.

1. Reviewing the state of the art and the trends in the use of Gamification in Education

This research will contribute to the understanding of how gamification can effectively be utilized in educational contexts. A meta-study of the published case studies of using gamification in education will be conducted through reviewing peer-reviewed publications hosted in the popular digital libraries and in the proceedings of the major education-related conferences. A special attention will be given to the contexts of educational uses of gamification and employed game elements with respect to their usage and effectiveness.

2. Presenting the prepared review of the state of the art in Gamification in Education at an AComIn seminar

This activity is directly relevant to the goal of the AComIn project for transferring of innovations to Bulgaria, in this case the innovative Gamification technology in the area of blended and online learning to the Bulgarian K12 and higher education. The goal is to familiarize a user group including representatives from relevant academic, administrative and educational communities with the state of the art and future trends of the use of gamification in education.

3. Activities related to the User Community “Intelligent Management of Digital Content”

The initiated in 2013 joint research with the hosting institution on semantic technolo- gies and annotation targeting large educational repositories will be continued. We plan to expand the established AComln User Community “Intelligent Management of Digital Content” by involving additional companies, such as “Ucha.se” and “Znam.bg”, interest- ed and willing to adopt emerging technologies in their educational products. We also plan to promote the idea of using gamification in educational contexts to the communi- ty. Special attention will be paid on the possible integration of game techniques with se- mantic technologies, for example, through building “knowledge maps” semantically or- ganizing the content’s metadata which can be used for better support of the employed game mechanics.
