Matthews, Jr., after 23 thirtyfour years of outstanding service to the people of the 24 Palmetto State; and 25 26 Whereas, beginning her service with the State of South Carolina as 27 a secretary in the office of Governor Dick Riley, Valarie, armed 28 with an associate degree in secretarial science from the University 29 of South Carolina, worked over the years as a legal secretary, 30 extradition assistant, and legislative secretary (all of these in the 31 office of Governor Riley), later taking on the duties of office 32 manager for Lieutenant Governor Nick Theodore and, finally, the 33 post of staff director for the South Carolina Senate office of 34 Senator John W. Matthews, Jr. In that office, she has served as 35 Senator Matthews’ secretary for nearly twentyfive years; and 36 37 Whereas, during her years working with the Senate, she also has 38 served in the offices of Senators Herbert Fielding, Maggie Glover, 39 Clementa Pinckney, Brad Hutto, Scott Richardson, Mike Rose, 40 Sammy Boan, and Katrina Shealy; and 41

[638] 2 1 Whereas, in addition, Valarie gained valuable privatesector 2 experience as an administrative assistant with Delowe 3 Corporation; and 4 5 Whereas, in recognition of her fine service to this great State, in 6 1987 Valarie was presented with the Order of the Palmetto, the 7 highest award bestowed on a civilian by the State of South 8 Carolina; and 9 10 Whereas, because she believes in active community involvement, 11 Valarie has been an active member of Ridgewood Missionary 12 Baptist Church since childhood, and she serves faithfully there as a 13 member of the youth ministry. Further, she is a member of the 14 Renaissance Foundation Board and a former member of the Sickle 15 Cell Anemia Foundation; and 16 17 Whereas, Valarie and her husband, Dalton Tresvant, are the proud 18 parents of six children, LaJuan Nicole Battle Tresvant, Nikkia 19 Janelle Smith, Alexis LaShae Tresvant, Mallory Richardson 20 Tresvant, Jalyn Richardson Tresvant, and Dalton J. Tresvant II, 21 who have given their parents the joy of three grandchildren, 22 William Timpton Tresvant, Ashton Dominique Tresvant, and 23 Madison Hailey Bright; and 24 25 Whereas, grateful for the legacy of consistent commitment and 26 excellence Valarie Tresvant has bestowed on this great State, the 27 Senate takes much pleasure in wishing her well in her retirement 28 and trusts she will find much enjoyment in the more leisurely pace 29 of the days ahead. Now, therefore, 30 31 Be it resolved by the Senate: 32 33 That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, 34 honor Valarie Richardson Tresvant of Columbia for her many 35 years of dedicated service to the people of South Carolina, 36 congratulate her on the occasion of her retirement as staff director 37 for the South Carolina Senate office of Senator John W. Matthews, 38 Jr., and wish her much success and fulfillment in all her future 39 endeavors. 40 41 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 42 Valarie Tresvant. 43 XX
