Hi all

Thanks for a smooth start to the year.

I mentioned that committee members are needed and valued. A few have asked for clarification about the role of the committees, and so here is a thumbnail summary.

SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT TEAM

Primary function is to develop the SMART goals for the year, and to make other recommendations. The committee examines relevant data, and school needs, while being aware of board and ministry goals and initiatives

We meet 4 -5 times per year, and members may attend special board-sponsored PD events.

(7-10 members + admin)

GRADE 8 OUTREACH

Primary function is to “bring the good news” to our feeder schools to encourage grade 8 students to choose Vanier. Two or three members steer the committee (guidance teachers + admin) and other teachers contribute ideas and actually visit the schools with various presentations. 12- 14 members + the core team. Busy from late sept to mid October.

SCHOOL ACTION TEAM (SAFE SCHOOLS COMMITTEE)

Primary function is to meet twice per semester and assess school safety and tone, by examining student survey data and other information, as well as to make recommendations to the principal. The committee in the past has chosen to work on the mental health education piece as well.

VP, often the H and S rep, at least one CYW, and several other staff at large.

LITERACY COMMITTEE

Primary function is to examine data, and develop and implement a plan to prepare students for the OSSLT in the spring. However, the committee may also choose to explore other issues of literacy and make recommendations to the principal.

Literacy lead, librarian, VP, and a rep from every dept is desirable.

Monthly meetings are the norm, with a busier time around the OSSLT. ean anier Catholic Secondary School 959 Midland Avenue Scarborough, ON, M1K 4G4

SOCIAL COMMITTEE

Primary function is to enhance the workplace experience by offering social opportunities to staff, and by recognizing special events in the lives of the members of the staff such as births, deaths, marriages, etc.

The committee would like to have 8 – 10 members to share the work load.
