This contract guarantees pure breeding on the above puppy, as established by the AKC Registration numbers following names of Sire and Dam, and a six-generation pedigree furnished by seller. Buyer agrees that the puppy above is being purchased as a pet and companion; and not for breeding purposes; to have the puppy neutered/spayed between the age of six (6) and nine (9) months of age, and so agrees by signature above. Buyer also understands that NO AKC registration papers will be furnished for this puppy, unless otherwise herein specified. This contract guarantees the above puppy to be sound, healthy and free of genetic defects (exceptions explained below). This puppy may be examined for a period of not more than five (5) days from date of this contract, during which time the puppy must be taken to the buyer’s Veterinarian for a complete examination to make this contract valid. I, Dorothy Kendall, do hereby guarantee the above described dog shall remain free of serious inherited defects that would affect its ability to function as a pet. A few words about Toy Dogs
All Toy puppies with long hair are in danger of getting “pasties”! This is where stool dries on the hair around the anus and makes it impossible for the puppy to eliminate ... bottoms should be checked twice a day while pups are young. It’s also important that small puppies eat at least 3 times a day to avoid hypoglycemia. A quality dry dog food should be available during the day for them to munch on ... and care taken to see they eat. Supplementing with high energy, low volume items like Stat, Nutrical, etc. are fine if a pup seems listless. Babies need lots of sleep, don’t wear them out playing with them ... a warm doughnut bed out of drafts gives a great opportunity for frequent naps.
A few toy dogs end up with luxating patellas (slipping kneecaps in the rear legs). This usually does not affect the quality of life of the pet unless the owners are into frisbee or agility. I have the pups' patellas checked before they leave, but this is a condition that often doesn't show up until the dog is 10-12 months ol age. If it's bad enough to require surgery, I recommend euthanasia and then replace. If the owner elects to keep the dog and have knee surgery done, that's their choice. (It's very expensive and not always 100 percent successful.) All that said, so far I have not had to replace a dog. This breed is amazingly healthy and free of genetic problems. I have heard of heart murmurs, but the dogs in question lived to be 13 and 15 years old!! I have seen no eye problems, and only 4 Liver Shunt puppies in 20+ years. ORLANE-ELAN YORKSHIRE TERRIERS
