2, Course Title: Continuing Education in the Community College and Higher Education

4. Course Prerequisites (if any): None

5. Course Description: This course will explore the history, relevant research, and the current practices in community college and higher education continuing education program and administrative units.

6. Course Goals and Objectives: Upon completion of this course the participant will be able to:

 Describe the major historical events leading to the development of the modern day adult and continuing education administrative unit housed in community colleges and universities.  Identify the programmatic issues facing college and university continuing education  Identify the issues relating to quality in all areas of programming including continuing professional education, elderhostels, and adult basic education.  Interpret and critically analyze the state mandated continuing education imposed upon those working in the trades and in the professions and develop a thoughtful institutional approach for this area of programming.  Develop a rationale for the extension of programmatic initiatives by using new programmatic delivery systems.  Develop a rationale for the inclusion of specialized programming that includes activities for older adults, children, the handicapped, the underprivileged, and the underserved.  Describe the administrative structures and mechanisms used to manage the continuing education function including ethical decision making and service to diverse populations.  Describe the major programmatic activities that relate directly to the human resource development for business and industry.  Identify and critically analyze the leadership skills necessary for continuing education administration.  Describe the major successful collaborative ventures between and among colleges and universities in order to establish any components of a model for success.  Analyze current methods of program needs assessment, promotion and marketing, and program/unit evaluation.  Describe the major research issues in continuing education administration.

8. Evaluations of Student Outcomes:

 Provide a presentation to the class summarizing your site visit experience at one of the Bay Area continuing education units housed in a college or university based upon a completed semi-structured questionnaire used to gather data during the site visit.  Provide a class presentation on a recent research article published in one of the continuing education administration journals.  Provide an in depth paper covering one of the several elements involved in continuing education administration in colleges and universities.  Provide input into a group presentation on a specific administrative strategy currently utilized in continuing education administration.

9. Grading Criteria:

 Attendance and participation in class discussion 15%  Site visit presentation 15%  Input into Group Presentation 25%  In Depth Paper 30%  Class presentation on research article 15%

 Journals to Include the Journal of Continuing Higher Education, the Continuing Higher Education Review, Community College Journal, and Community College Times.

Instructor knowledge and experience; research on theory and current practices in the field; and dialogue with colleagues across the country and in the state of Florida including a Florida based committee on community college continuing education

3. Are their field-based experiences in this course?

Students must conduct a site visit of a Bay area continuing education administrative unit housed in the community college or in a university. This site visit using takes 90-180 minutes and students complete a semi-structured interview schedule with the unit’s top administrative personnel

4. Is technology used?

Students will use software such as power point presentations to present their group presentations. Students will be expected to use email to conduct business among each other and with the instructor. Students will be expected to download continuing education web sites from various colleges and universities and to use the USF virtual library. 5. List the specific competencies addressed from the Florida Adopted Subject Area Competencies.
