NAQT Alabama State Championship Bevill State Community College Jasper, Alabama

15 March 2003

The NAQT State Tournament took place in Jasper at BSCC Saturday, 15 March 2003. Ten teams took part in the tournament that is sponsored annually by the National Academic Quiz Tournament, LLC.

The tournament was organized and run by Glenn Allen Bobo, Chemistry Professor and College Bowl sponsor, at Bevill State Community College. NAQT rules were used (www.naqt.com) which called for rounds of 20 questions. Each correctly-answered toss-up is followed by a 30 point bonus question offered only to the team that answered the toss-up (no bounce-backs).

Ten teams participated in the grueling round-robin competition, which took nine rounds to complete and lasted from 9 am until 5:15 pm. The team teams were Albertville HS, Bibb County HS, Bob Jones HS, Clay-Chalkville HS, Daphne HS, Fort Payne HS, Holy Spirit Catholic HS, Hoover HS, Indian Springs School, and Russellville HS.

Bob Jones HS won the tournament with a fantastic 8-1 record! There was a four-way tie for second place among Clay-Chalkville, Daphne, Indian Springs, and Russellville. Based on the head-to-head records among the four, Indian Springs HS was awarded the second-place trophy with Daphne HS taking third. Congratulations to all these schools for their excellent play.

Professor Bobo also recognized an All-Tournament Team. Slade Gilmer of Russellville was MVP. Tied for second place were Neel Srikishen of Bob Jones and Evan Wilson of Indian Springs. Brett Hamock of Albertville was fourth.

Bob Jones High School thus receives an automatic bid to the NAQT National Tournament to be held at Myrtle Beach, SC on May 31. Other Alabama teams may receive invitations. For information, go to www.naqt.com.
