Discuss Instructional Materials:
Lee Childs reported on the proposed implementation of a new curriculum package – The CAD Academy. o The CAD Academy was mentioned during a previous meeting however, it is now a reality as Broward County has adopted this new software bundle. The CAD Academy includes: Building-Information- Modeling “A+CAD,” “Archicad,” “Google Sketch-up Pro,” “SolidWorks,” “Bentley Microstation,” and “Google Blender.” o Bob Usefof reported that this software has already been installed at several county schools and it will replace AutoCAD as the drafting software used in the high school and technical center programs. o Training has been approved and scheduled for all drafting teachers.
o Gloria Clavijo mentioned the widely used “Microstation Software” for Civil Drafting which has been adopted by many state construction agencies. It was also noted that “BIM” (Building Information Modeling) is now the standard for state construction projects. This type of drafting software facilitates and expedites the entire construction process from the drawings to the completed project. o The CAD Academy seems to be a more teacher/student friendly software and a good fit for education. It incorporates great software, has good internet resources, directly links to math and science, and is well supported. There is free information and tutorials on-line and the package seems to be “user-friendly.” o After much discussion, all agreed that the change to CAD Academy was a good move.
Bob Usefof reminded attendees that The CAD Academy also has a certification process via ADDA. The certification is needed for all of our drafting programs. o Teacher certification has already begun with testing last month and numerous teachers have been certified by ADDA.
Questions, Comments, and Open Discussion
Brad Olmsted mentioned the E-learning process being implemented at Sheridan Technical Center with the following discussions: o All three technical centers have implemented E-learning; “Blackboard” is the most common program used. o The CAD Academy software offers an opportunity to expand the use of E-learning in our drafting programs which is free to students and can be used at home. o Bob Usefof reminded attendees of the development of “Best Practices” which could possibly align with all of the changes mentioned during this meeting. In addition, instructors should be developing and implementing these in the classroom.
Bob Usefof mentioned the need to incorporate “LEED Certification” into the curriculum.
Follow-Up Items/Next Steps
Lee Childs asked Bob Usefof if he could assist with coordinating E-learning, Best Practices, and LEED Certification concepts next year; Bob Usefof agreed.
