REMINDER TO ALL MEMBERS Lockheed Martin's Workplace Security policy, CPS-565 is strictly enforced. One provision of the policy is a workplace free of weapons, which includes Firearms, Ammunition, Bows and Arrows. The club must emphasize this policy to our members. Additionally, a state issued CCW permit does not supersede nor over ride this LMA policy. Members wanting to store firearms or archery equipment during the day ONLY, must contact Gene Adamson (303-971-1531) or Dave Mulholland (303-977-3674) for access instructions.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER If it’s August it must be time for the annual Skyline Bull Roast! I hope you’ll join us this year for some first class BBQ and some world class hunting and marksmanship truth-stretching. And it is the political season, so who knows who might show up as a special guest. In industry news, I’m told that Sturm Ruger CEO Mr. Michael Fifer will be at Specialty Sports in Colorado Springs on August 8-9, 2008. Here is your chance to meet the head man at one of America’s most admired gun makers and to offer your suggestions on building the perfect firearm. Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company has completed their internal self inspection of the Skyline H&F Club’s operations. In the final report, the LMSSC team made some excellent recommendations to improve the coordination between the club and the company and to improve club operations with an emphasis on safety and security. The Board is working the implementation issues on the high priority items and we expect all actions to be finished in time for the planned August 18th LM Corporate audit. The good news is that at this point we do not expect any major changes to club operations. There will be some changes to range rules to comply with the self inspection that we’ll communicate to the membership when they are finalized. Finally, on a sad note, one of the Ridge Riders horses was put down as a result of an injury likely caused by a motor vehicle. If any member has any information, please contact George Lorentz of the Ridge Riders club. All members are requested to use the utmost caution while traveling on the range access road and while using the Skyline facilities.

NEED NEW MEMBERSHIP CHAIR Your club is in need of a volunteer to assume the duties of Membership chair. Tony Christensen has stepped in as acting membership chair with support from John Larue. The hard part is done for this year, renewals are completed, and John Larue will stay on to assist the new membership chair. We need a volunteer to take over for Tony as soon as possible and keep this important club function operating. Please contact Dennis Dal Pra, 303-977-0992 if interested.

NEW TREASURER At the July members meeting, Cliff Sweetra volunteered to be the club treasurer for the remainder of the year. The Board members quickly accepted Cliff’s offer. Thank you for stepping up, Cliff. The best way to contact Cliff is via email at [email protected] .

OUTDOOR BUDDIES SIGHT IN Sunday August 10th, SHFC will host the annual sight-in for the Outdoor Buddies at the 100 yard range from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Outdoor Buddies is an organization of volunteers helping the mobility impaired to enjoy outdoor activities including hunting and fishing. Able-Buddies accompany the disabled Handi-Buddies on a one-to-one basis. Sunday August 17th will be a backup date in case of bad weather. For information, contact Cal Ensor at 303-794-5796.

PASTURE ROTATION AND RANGE ROAD GATES Currently the horses are in pasture 13 north requiring the closure of the cattle grate gate and the archery range gate. Due to the dry conditions, pasture moves are less predictable and depend on how the grass holds up in the pasture. The next planned move is to pasture 14 on August 30. This will require the gate between the archery range and the lower pavilion and the gate at the top of the rise before the electronic gate remain closed when the horses are in this pasture. While traveling on the road with horses in pasture, please slow down and be alert to horses on the road. Last month, a horse was seriously injured, and had to be put down, after it appeared to have been hit by something large. If you observe anyone travelling at excessive speed on the road, report it to Plant Protection. You will be notified of future rotations that affect the range road via email notification, this newsletter and the club website. Due to weather and other reasons, the planned pasture rotations may change. Please follow the range road pasture gate instructions. Thank you.

2 Sometime this month or next, the cattle guard gate will be pulled out and reinstalled. It is expected to happen during working hours when the range is closed.

BOD MINUTES 07 JULY 2008 Attendees: Dennis Dal Pra, Karl Thompson, Keith Davis, Tony Christensen, Walter Tang, Dennis Casey, Gene Adamson, Cal Ensor, Mike Pfeifer 1) BOD approved requested dates for Outdoor Buddies Sight In from Cal Ensor 2) Mike Pfeifer brought to BOD attention he received a box of miscellaneous tools from previous fishing chair. Company self assessment audit report completed. b. 34 recommendations made. c. BOD to review and respond to recommendations.

NEW CLUB POLICIES IN EFFECT EMPTY CHAMBER INDICATORS (ECI) AND SAFE HANDLING/TRANSPORTATION OF FIREARMS (CLARIFICATION- PLEASE READ) The following clarification of the use of ECIs is intended to clear up some confusion. Transporting to the range: Members are required to verify the safe (unloaded) status of firearms, including the installation of ECIs whenever possible, before arriving at the range. Remember that all firearms being transported across LM property to or from the Skyline range MUST be unloaded. Arrival at the range: ALL firearms shall be carried from a vehicle to a specific range/shooting station with a visible ECI in place or unloaded in a closed case. Closed cases shall not be opened unless positioned on the firing line with no one in front of the firing line. In accordance with current Range Rules, there will be NO HANDLING OF FIREARMS AT ANY TIME when persons are down range. Use at the range: Any firearm behind the firing line shall have the action open, chamber clear, ECI in place whenever possible and stored in the holding racks, closed case or holster. Verify firearm is unloaded before storing in the closed case or holster. Any firearm on the firing line left unattended (as during a cease fire), shall have the action open, chamber clear, ECI in place

3 whenever possible or stored in a closed case. Verify the firearm is unloaded before storing in the closed case. Club organized matches and events may have alternate, Board-approved, written safety procedures. Some types of firearms cannot effectively accommodate ECIs, therefore the following shall be done to “show safe” while at the range. Break-open shotguns shall be broken open when possible or verified unloaded and placed in the holding rack or closed case. Muzzle loaders shall be unloaded with NO cap in place and placed in the holding rack or closed case. Fixed cylinder revolvers shall be verified unloaded and placed in a holster or closed case. Members not following the Range Rules are subject to disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal from the club! The board is considering updating (for clarification) the safe handling (ECI) rules in the Range Safety Rules. Members can provide feedback on the ECI rules to the BOD by emailing them to Walter Tang at [email protected] To encourage use of ECIs and attendance at club meetings and events, SHFC will provide free ECIs to members attending club meetings and events while supplies last.

RELEASE OF LIABILITY All guests, family members or not, need to fill out and sign each time they visit the range. Release of Liability forms are available at each range. Signed forms need to be deposited in the marked mail slot at the purchasing shed. The release can also be found by visiting the club website, http://gvtg.com/skyline/ , and clicking the Membership tab. Plant Protection will be periodically checking to ensure compliance with badging and waiver requirements, so BE COMPLIANT!

STATUS OF CLUB FFL Our purchasing team has finalized the club’s purchasing process document and we are finalizing arrangements for the new FFL premises. We hope to announce the new arrangements very soon.

ELECTRONIC GATE Per the SHFC Range Rules, each club member is required to "wand" their electronic gate card at the electronic gate for accountability. This will also reset the arm’s timer so it doesn’t come down on your vehicle. Upon leaving the range, each person should push the gate open button so the arm’s timer is reset so it doesn’t come down on your vehicle on the way out.

ALTERNATIVE TO ELECTRONIC GATE If the electronic gate is malfunctioning or has been damaged, the club will use the manual gate that is located just past the electric one (in bound) as a backup. The combination lock on that gate will be the same as the former SHFC lock on the front gate (The number is on your club badge). THE CLUB MEMBER IS STILL REQUIRED TO "WAND" THEIR ELECTRONIC GATE CARD AT THE ELECTRONIC GATE FOR ACCOUNTABILITY. Signs are being placed that will Caution personnel approaching the gate(s). The first one to the range opens the manual gate, the last one out locks the manual gate.

COWBOY ACTION – SASS We shoot from 5-7 pm on alternating Thursdays. Lead only bullets for pistols, rifle and light trap loads for shotgun. The activities will be held on these Thursdays Aug 14-21, Sept 11-25. Contact Mark Bonkowski (303-977-3360).

PRACTICAL PISTOL LITE Practical Pistol Lite has started and we will continue on every other Monday. In August, we’ll shoot on the 4th and the 18th . The theme has changed to address more personal protection and actual defensive shooting and less timed shooting. If you want to see how fast you can shoot a course, this is not the activity for you. Make sure to bring your semi-auto pistol (9mm up to 45 cal), holster, 3 magazines, mag holster and at least 50 rounds. Plus we will include a stage for the tactical shotgun, and will explore having a tactical rifle stage occasionally. Starting time will be 5:00 pm at the Pistol House and continue on for about 2 hours. New safety rules will be addressed at the first and all activities. Call Dave Norris (303-932-4822)

PRACTICAL PISTOL - LADIES ONLY

7 Every other Monday, we hold a LADIES ONLY practical pistol shooting activity. In August, we’ll shoot on the 11th and the 25th and then every other Monday in September. Ladies, you can bring a pistol from a .22 cal to a .45 cal, revolver or semi-auto. If your significant other attends, he cannot say a word to you, only watch with mouth closed. If he says anything, he goes to the other range. This is for the LADIES ONLY. We have plenty of instructors for your assistance. You will need a holster, at least 2 speed loaders for a revolver, at least 2 mags (better with 3 mags) for a semi-auto. Dress code: flat soled low heel shoes/boots, remove any dangling jewelry, excess rings, bracelets, etc., wear loose clothing, dress in layers due to weather changes. Bring eye and ear protection. New safety rules will be addressed at all activities. Call Tom Frickell (303-971-5493).

PRACTICAL PISTOL The 2008 Wednesday Night Practical Pistol season is up and running with more fun and challenging stages and new steel we just received. Setup starts at 4:45 pm and shooting starts at 5:00 pm after the safety orientation. Our Wednesday night shoots are informal USPSA/IPSC/IDPA type stages. The game is accuracy and speed and we emphasize safety and fun. On the 3rd Wednesdays of the month, we have a tactical shotgun stage along with the pistol. Call Mike Sullivan (303-977-3478).

SUMMER 3-GUN Summer 3-Gun is normally held on the 3rd Saturday of each month and goes through October. For August, it’ll be on the 16th. Start time will be a little later than normal due to schedule conflict and to avoid the heat. Start time of 5:00 pm with setup starting at 4:30 pm. For those new to 3-gun, it is similar to our Wednesday night practical pistol except we shoot the pistol, shotgun and semi-auto carbine/rifle for a combination of accuracy and speed. Since the Summer 3-Gun runs concurrent to practical pistol, we’ll have a heavier emphasis on the rifle and shotgun. Typical ammo requirement is roughly 25 rounds of pistol, 50 rounds of rifle, 25 rounds of shotgun (mostly birdshot and occasionally 5 rounds of slug and buckshot) if you don’t miss. Contact Walter Tang at 303-977-6474 or email [email protected] to get on the mailing list. I usually send out the stage description before the shoot so you’ll know how much ammo to bring.

HIGH POWER June/July High Power Results & News The 2008 Colorado High Power schedule is posted on the SHFC website, and there are many opportunities to compete in High Power (Service Rifle and Match Rifle) as well as Garand matches, “Any/Any” matches, full-bore, etc. High Power matches are conducted every off-Friday, finishing by noon or 1 PM. We welcome all types of high power service or match rifles; some choose to shoot the Garand or M1A but the AR-15 is the choice of most. The club has three AR-15s, a Garand, two shooting mats, and a spotting scope with stand which are available to use during matches. Stages 1 & 2 of the 27 June match were fired from the 200 yard line. Stage 3 was fired from the 300 yard line, and Stage 4 was deleted due to wind strong enough to tear the targets off the backers.

10 FISHING Colorado's Zebra Mussel Issue! The following letter was mailed in early July to all Colorado residents having a registered watercraft. Additionally, it now appears Boulder Reservoir has implemented inspections of watercraft for this local fishing spot.

11 Quagga Mussels Found in Lake Granby 7/15/2008

A State and Federal initiative to gather more information on the presence of invasive mussels in Colorado confirmed the detection of quagga mussel larvae in Lake Granby in July. Quagga

12 mussels are very similar to the zebra mussels that were found last fall in Pueblo Reservoir.

Veligers, the larval stage of the quagga mussel, were initially identified by a microscopic analysis of water samples and subsequently confirmed by DNA testing. An additional independent lab confirmed the presence of quagga mussel DNA in the samples.

The Colorado Division of Wildlife, the Bureau of Reclamation, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District are cooperating with partners on the development of an appropriate plan for each of the Colorado-Big Thompson reservoirs.

Public awareness and participation is the best weapon in the containment of invasive species. Invasive mussels endanger water quality, and fisheries. Boaters at Lake Granby are reminded to take the simple precaution of making sure that they Clean, Drain, and Dry their boat when they leave the lake.

Quagga and zebra mussels spread from Eurasia to the Northeast and Great Lakes in contaminated ballast water of boats, on anchors and anchor lines. They quickly spread to the Mississippi River, its tributaries and inland lakes and have now established a presence in the Western States.

Quagga and zebra mussels are small barnacle-like mollusks with dark and light colored stripes. They smother aquatic organisms, such as crayfish and native clams and out compete for food and aquatic habitat. They damage equipment by attaching to boat motors or hard surfaces and clog water treatment facilities.

For more information about zebra and quagga mussels visit www.wildlife.state.co.us/WildlifeSpecies/Profiles/InvasiveSpecies/ZebraandQuaggaMussels.htm

WATER PURCHASED FOR SOUTHEAST RESERVOIRS 7/16/2008

Colorado Springs - Two important fisheries in southeast Colorado have more water this year as a result of agreements reached between the state and the cities of Aurora and Colorado Springs. Excess run-off from near record winter snowfall made it possible for the Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) to buy water for Nee Noshe Reservoir. The DOW and the city of Aurora reached agreement for 10,000 acre-feet of water for Nee Noshe Reservoir in Kiowa County near Eads, Colo. Earlier this year, the DOW and Colorado State Parks split the cost to purchase 3,800 acre-feet for John Martin from Colorado Springs Utilities. The two agencies went together to buy water from the Pueblo Board of Water Works last year.

Both John Martin and Nee Noshe have been steadily shrinking the past several years. This is the second year in-a-row the DOW has been able to get additional water for John Martin, but the first time water was added to Nee Noshe. DOW biologists were contemplating salvage

13 operations to prevent fish from going to waste, but the infusion of new water will give them new life.

Not too many years ago, anglers considered Nee Noshe as one of the best places to catch large wipers in Colorado. Recently, however, the reservoir shrank to less than ten percent of capacity. In 2000, Nee Noshe was 3,500 surface acres. This spring, it was only a few hundred surface acres.

Sampling last fall found fair numbers of catfish, but Nee Noshe's remaining wipers and saugeyes were in poor shape. "We plan to evaluate the reservoir and re-stock the lake according to the improved water conditions," said Jim Ramsay, a fishery biologist with the DOW's Lamar Office. "We came close to losing it, but with the addition of this much needed water, we can continue stocking the reservoir with sport fish," said Ramsay.

John Martin almost went dry in the fall of 2006. At that time, the DOW and DPOR were able to reach agreements with local irrigation companies to keep it from dying. In the spring of 2007 water was purchased from both the Pueblo Board of Water Works and Colorado Springs Utilities.

When full, John Martin can hold over 600,000 acre-feet of water – giving it the potential to be the largest reservoir in the state. John Martin is known as one of the top spots in southeast Colorado for crappies, wiper, catfish, walleye, saugeye, perch, bluegill, bass and other warm water species.

ANTERO RESERVOIR REOPENED TO BOATING 7/9/2008

The Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) and Denver Water are pleased to announce the return of trailered boat use at Antero Reservoir. Reopening on July 10th, boat usage will be restricted to the North boat ramp where trained personnel will inspect and decontaminate watercraft 7 days a week, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

General Info: Denver Water Board has established a telephone hotline with current information on boating and inspections at Denver Water owned resivoirs (Antero, Elevenmile, Cheesman, Gross, Dillon and Williams Fork). That number is 303-607-3160. Give it a listen, it is updated regularly. A few facts about Zebra Mussels. o Adult mussels are about the size of an adult pinky fingernail o A single mussel will filter 1 liter of water per day o Mussels will filter water feeding on plankton

14 o Mussels will encase extra food and excrement in a gelatin like substance. This substance becomes as much of a problem as the mussels since it sinks to the bottom and creates lifeless dump sites. o Mussels can live in densities of 175K per square yard. o Mussels will clear up the water too much, removing plankton that shad and other fry need to survive. Let's do what we can to prevent the spread. Clean your boats, dry up any standing water before hitting another lake.
