Introduction to TS420 PriMON The TS420 PriMON is for use by installation and maintenance technicians to monitor a Euro ISDN primary rate interface to verify that the terminal equipment to network protocol is functioning correctly at Layer 1, 2 and 3.

Used in stand-alone mode it is simple and intuitive to use and provides a quick verification tool for installers.

TS420 PriMON 5 04/25/18 TTS420 PriMON Euro ISDN Primary Rate Monitor Used in conjunction with Genius PC protocol analysis software, TS420 PriMON is an extremely powerful maintenance analysis tool. When used with Genius, TS420 PriMON parameters such as the serial port setup, date and time are automatically set to the PC settings on connection or when invoking the Genius application.

This User's Guide describes the TS420 PriMON used as a stand-alone maintenance tool or connected to a PC running Windows Terminal, HyperTerminal or any other terminal emulation programme. Genius is described in a separate User's Guide.

TS420 PriMON can be bridged in high impedance mode onto a Network - Terminal connection or connected to 75 ohm attenuated monitor points on access network equipment.

TS420 PriMON is powered by two AA batteries, which give up to 20 hours continuous operation. Alternatively, a plug top mains PSU can be used which provides regulated output of 4.5Vdc, 100mA dc minimum fitted with a 2.5mm dc plug. Note that the mains PSU MUST BE REGULATED. Layer 2 LED indicators A Layer 2 Activated LED indicates if a Layer 2 data link is established for each of the Terminal and Network signal directions. When a Layer 2 connection is established the Layer 2 Activated LED flashes green. If a Layer 2 data link fails or is not present then the LED is OFF.

Layer 3 LED indicators There are 6 Layer 3 message indicator LEDS for each of the Terminal and Network signal directions. These LEDS decode Layer 3 message types for a particular call (the

TS420 PriMON 14 04/25/18 TTS420 PriMON Euro ISDN Primary Rate Monitor same call reference value). Upon decoding the message type the condition is latched and the LED flashes green until the RESET button is pressed.

The purpose of the Layer 3 LEDS is to give a quick visual indication that the Layer 3 call setup and clear down sequence is functioning correctly.

This feature is useful if the TS420 PriMON is being used in stand alone mode during equipment commissioning, or to give a quick health check on the PRI access link.

A typical message sequence for a call established by the Terminal side, answered at the destination called party and cleared by the Terminal side would be indicated as shown below.

TS420 PriMON with Windows Terminal or HyperTerminal TS420 PriMON can operate in a basic protocol decode mode with a PC running a terminal emulation program such as Windows Terminal or HyperTerminal.

In this mode a simple time and date stamped protocol decode trace can be viewed in real time and stored on the PC using the terminal emulation program.

The TS420 PriMON has 128kbytes of SRAM FIFO buffer memory, which will store the protocol trace if the data rate exceeds the serial port rate temporarily, if the serial port is not connected, or the PC interrupts the data flow.

Connecting TS420 PriMON to a PC To connect the TS420 PriMON to a PC running a terminal emulation program, carry out the following steps:

1. Connect the 9 way D cable to the TS420 PriMON and an available COM port on the PC using an adapter at the PC if necessary.

2. Invoke the terminal emulation program on the PC (e.g. HyperTerminal)

TS420 PriMON 17 04/25/18 TTS420 PriMON Euro ISDN Primary Rate Monitor

3. Set the selected COM port parameters from within the terminal program to: baud rate: 19200; data bits: 8; stop bits: 1 parity: none; flows control: Xon/Xoff

4. Connect the TS420 PriMON onto the PRI network 5. Switch the TS420 PriMON ON by holding down RESET and pressing I/O together for > 1 second. This will set the default baud rate of 19200.

[Note that when using the Genius protocol analysis software, the Genius software will automatically set the TS420 PriMON parameters negotiating the fastest baud rate and synchronizing the date and time to the PC clock.]

6. The following text header should appear in the PC terminal window
