Hattie Cotton Behavior Definitions Minor Problem Definition Inappropriate Verbal Low intensity instance of inappropriate language Language (ex. Sucks, crap, shut up, stupid, etc.). Non-serious, but inappropriate physical contact (ex. Physical Contact poking, tripping, touching). Defiance/Disrespect/Non- Brief or low intensity failure to respond to adult compliance requests (ex. ignore, shrug, defiant look). Low-intensity, but inappropriate disruption (ex. Disruption pencil tapping, blurting out, getting out of seat). Low-intensity misuse of property (ex. write on Property Misuse desks, write on bathroom walls). Any other minor problem behaviors that do not fall Other within the above categories.

Major Problem Definition Abusive Verbal messages that include swearing, name Language/Inappropriate calling, racial or gender slangs or use of words in Language/Profanity an inappropriate way so as to hurt or threaten. Alcohol Student is in possession of or is using alcohol. Student plans and/or participates in malicious Arson burning of property. Student delivers or calls in a message of possible BombThreat/False Alarm explosive materials being on-campus, near campus, and/or pending explosion. Student is in possession of substances/objects readily capable of causing bodily harm and/or Combustibles property damage (matches, lighters, firecrackers, gasoline, lighter fluid). Defiance/Disrespect/ Refusal to follow adult directions, talking back Insubordination/ and/or socially rude interactions. High intensity Non-compliance disrespect and body language. Behavior causing an interruption in a class or activity. Disruption includes sustained loud talk, Disruption yelling, or screaming; inappropriate noises; noise with materials; horseplay or roughhousing; and/or sustained out-of-seat behavior. Student wears clothing that does not fit within the Dress Code Violation dress code guidelines practiced by the school/district. Actions involving serious physical contact where Fighting/Physical injury may occur (e.g., hitting, punching, hitting with Aggression an object, kicking, hair pulling, scratching, spitting, pinching, tripping). Student is in possession of, having passed on, or being responsible for removing someone else's Forgery/Theft property or has signed a person's name without that person's permission. Student delivers disrespectful messages (verbal or gestural) to another person that includes threats and intimidation, unwanted physical contact, obscene gestures, pictures or written notes. Harassment/Bullying Disrespectful messages include negative comments based on race, religion, gender, age, and/or national origin; sustained or intense verbal attacks based on ethnic origin, disabilities or other personal matters. Student delivers message that is untrue and/or Lying/Cheating deliberately violates rules. (e.g. dishonesty, copying, plagarism) Student is in possession of or is using illegal Other Drugs drugs/substances or imitations. Student deliberately impairs the usefulness of any Property Damage school or personal property. Student leaves class/school without permission or Skip Class/Truancy stays out of class/school without permission. Tobacco Student is in possession of or is using tobacco. Student participates in an activity that results in Vandalism/Property substantial destruction or disfigurement of property, Damage including landscaping, building, and other's property. Student is in possession of knives or guns (real or Weapons look alike), or other objects readily capable of causing bodily harm. Other is a field that SWIS offers for schools to Other define problem behaviors at a more specific level.
