Nominees for Field Sports Complex Revised, March 3, 2003 (The names in bold were nominated during the 2003 process)

Nominee Brief Description Alton D. Rison Dr. Rison was a founder/first publisher of the only study guide to help low performing minorities and schools on the TAAS/TAKS test in the state. He was a former school administrator of the city of New York, but retired/returned to Austin in 1988, to come and work with schools in the Austin, Houston, and Dallas public schools as well as charters and parents. Many students of the Austin ISD were able to pass the TAAS after using his material and workshops. Dr. Rison was a firm believer in the talent of all students as a natural gift they should not ignore, even when other say they are disruptive and not able to achieve. Dr. Rison encouraged students, parents, and staff of AISD to refocus and encourage students’ natural talents in the arts and athletics. He was honored by the Texas House of Representatives for outstanding contributions to Austin and the broader community. Dorothy Orebo As principal of LBJ High School, she did so much to establish LBJ as one of the finest high schools in Texas. She was instrumental in brining the Science academy to LBJ and under her leadership LBJ High School produced more scholarship monies than any other school ever in AISD. Mrs. Orebo retired from AISD in 1992 with 33 years of service. She started her education pathway as an English teachers at Kealing JHS, then went to Johnston as a teacher and Dean of Women. At LBJ HS she was a House Principal, an Associate Principal and Principal. Elnora (Ellie) Noack Ms. Noack taught physical education at all grade levels for Austin ISD. She was an Instructional Coordinator for several years. She also served as Assistant Athletics Director and Athletic Director. This past summer she was inducted in the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association Hall of Honor. Her expectations of students, teachers, and coaches performance are well recognized. Hero Stadium In “Honor and Memory” for all military persons, police officers, and firefighters. Ida Mae Collins Ms. Collins has been an AISD bus driver since 1973. James S. Acker Coach Acker has been an icon in the field of Athletics four decades as a coach at Lamar Jr. High, McCallum HS, Anderson HS. At Anderson he gave the Trojans their first district football championship and the very next year he coached the baseball team into the state playoffs. Respect, Honor and Integrity are words that define James S. Acker, and these are characteristics that he knowingly passed on to those of us fortunate enough to have crossed his path. Coach Acker retired from AISD in 1989. James Keller James Keller went to school in Austin. He was an outstanding athlete and he died several years ago of ALS. He was an inspiration to all throughout his illness and will be remembered fondly by all who knew him as a school classmate or as a baseball coach. Jorge Luis Rodriquez Mr. Rodriquez in an AISD Administrator. His passion for education and the success of all children is limitless. He make time for his students and time for those not even assigned to him but Nominee Brief Description need someone to talk to. Lance Armstrong Mr. Armstrong overcame adversity (cancer) to reach a difficult goal (winning the Tour de France) — three times! His example of determination is inspirational to young people and adults alike. He represents the qualities that the school district and we, as parents, strive to instill in our children. Known internationally, he is a popular hero with young people and I believe his name would inspire them to achieve at the highest levels. Lawrence M. Britton, I feel the complex should be named for an individual that has served Sr. the entire Austin community. Lawrence Britton Sr., was in the education profession for over 31 years, with 29 years in AISD as a teacher and coach at the old LC Anderson HS, McCallum HS and Reagan HS. When older Anderson HS entered the UIL , his team won back-to-back district championships in 1968 and 1969 and one Bi-District Championship that advanced to Regional play in 1969. He was one of the organizers of the East Austin Youth Foundation. He was inducted into the Prairie View Hall of Honor, Austin Sports Hall of Honor, and recognized by the Legislative Black Caucus of the State of Texas for Outstanding Contribution in Athletics and for service level commitment to Black Texans and the State of Texas. Leon Cashaw Mr. Cashaw worked in Texas and Austin with diversity training, education and desegregation planning Loretta Edelen Ms. Edelen is a current AISD school board member serving for the past 8 years. Rodney Kidd Mr. Kidd was the director of the University Interscholastic League (after Roy Bedichek) for many years. He also owned and operated Friday Mountain Camp, and in the 1950’s AISD sixth graders were privileged to spend a week at the camp. In addition, her as the Scoutmaster of Troop 3 for many years. Ronald Kirk Mr. Kirk is the son of Willie Mae Kirk, an AISD graduate, and former Mayor of Dallas. Standard (Stan) Stan Lambert came to AISD in the Fall of 1935 as an assistant Lambert football coach. He was the head football coach at AHS from 1937 to 1948, an won the state football championship in 1942. AHS recognized Coach Lambert’s contributions by making him the first inductees into the SFA Hall of Fame. In 1985, the Texas High School Coacher Assoc. inducted him into their Hall of Fame. Although Lambert’s teams excelled as football players, he also saw to it that they excelled off the field as well. Among the leading Austinites who played football for Coach Lambert are Johnnie Rodgers, Jimmy Banks, Jack Allison, Will Davis, and Desmond Kidd. Tyrone Johnson Coach Johnson represented Austin well as a player at Austin High and the University of Texas and a Coach at Anderson High. Coach Johnson was about so much more than winning. Coach Johnson instilled in his players the values of discipline, fair play, promptness, hard work, and always striving to do your best. As a Coach in AISD, I saw Coach Johnson as a leader in his field. He was respected in Central Texas and across the state by his professional peers. I learned much about coaching from Coach Johnson and I know that everything he did was always in the best interest of the kids. Nominee Brief Description William King Mr. King, age 16, was one of the youngest Texans to die in the Alamo. This young man should be honored as a role model or hero for other young students. William Pigford Mr. Pigford’s long career as a coach and educator spanned 41-years. He was a coach for 16 years at Anderson HS, served for 13 years as principal Anderson HS, and 5 years assistant principal at Reagan HS. William Sutherland Mr. Sutherland, age 17, was one of the youngest Texans to die in the Alamo. This young man should be honored as a role model or hero for other young students.
