IMPERIAL COUNTY

CLASS TITLE: INVESTIGATIVE ASSISTANT

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of an assigned Supervisor, provide Investigative support to the District Attorney’s Office; assist the District Attorney Investigator in a variety of operations and activities; organize and service court documents; locate and interview witnesses; perform related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Investigative Assistant incumbents provide investigative support to attorneys or investigators by assisting in the service of court documents, locating and interviewing witnesses and retrieving documents and reports. Incumbents in the Investigative Specialist position assist with routine aspects of non-criminal investigations and are a non-safety classification.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Provide Investigative support to the District Attorney’s Office; assist the District Attorney Investigator in a variety of operations and activities; research information for case evidence; record crime scenes and provide investigative support to attorneys in trial; assure operations and activities comply with established State and County policies, procedures, rules and regulations.

Provide investigative support to include computer design, digital and manual renderings of crime scenes, sketches, evidence, documents, photographs and digital photography.

Organize and service court documents; assist attorneys in the preparation of files, records, reports, evidence and documentation for trial; assist in case development; retrieve documents and reports as required; prepare charts, courtroom exhibits and presentations; participate in case report tracking.

Perform a variety of field activities including locating and interviewing witnesses, photographing crime scenes or evidence; perform related duties as required.

Communicate with other staff, departments and outside agencies in person and over the phone to exchange information, coordinate activities and resolve issues or concerns.

Present evidence and testify as a witness in court proceedings.

Operate a variety of office equipment including a calculator, copier, fax machine, computer and assigned software.

Analyze data and information; organize in report form and draw conclusions; interpret directions, procedures, regulations and activities and develop solutions in a timely manner.

Maintain a variety of reports related to litigation organization, research and presentation; maintain legal files and documentation in a confidential manner.

Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Principles of identification, preservation and presentation of evidence. The Criminal Justice System. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. Record collection, keeping and organization techniques. Research methods and report writing techniques. Laws, rules and regulations related to assigned activities. Policies and objectives of assigned program and activities. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Oral and written communication skills. Applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures. Legal research methods applicable to County activities and operations. Operation of a computer and assigned software. Public relations techniques.

ABILITY TO: Provide Investigative support to the District Attorney’s Office. Assist the District Attorney Investigator in a variety of operations and activities. Organize and service court documents; locate and interview witnesses. Perform related duties as required. Understand and apply generally accepted investigative techniques. Research and extract factual information. Analyze situations and factual information and take effective action. Prepare complete and concise oral and written reports. Present evidence as a witness in judicial proceedings. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Compile and verify data and prepare reports. Learn, interpret, apply and explain policies, procedures, rules and regulations. Learn and operate a variety of digital photographic and recording equipment. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Draft legal memoranda, summaries, stipulations and legal pleadings. Design and prepare brochures, drafts, graphs and scale drawings. Prepare digital rendering of crime scene sketches, evidence and documents.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and college level course work in criminal justice, social work, law enforcement, or related field and one year experience performing criminal or civil investigations or experience in computer or graphic design.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid California Class C driver’s license.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

ENVIRONMENT: Indoor environment. Driving a vehicle to conduct work.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Dexterity of hands to operate a computer keyboard. Seeing to read a variety of materials. Hearing and speaking to exchange information. Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.

HAZARDS: Contact with dissatisfied or abusive individuals.
