Soc. entomol. ital. 135(1): 19-23. Adult male and female of Leuctra queyrassiana orsiera ssp. n., are described. This subspecies inhabits the northern part of the Cottian Alps, between the Chisone and Susa valleys. It occurs in springs and brooklets, at moderate altitude (1,200 -1,600 m a.s.l.). Moreover, the typical species L. queyrassiana queyrassiana Ravizza & Vincon, 1991 is also new for Italy and was found in the central part of the Cottian Alps (high Pellice and Germanasca Valleys). The description is supported by original drawings of both the new subspecies and of L. queyrassiana queyrassiana. [sz] RAVIZZA DEMATTEIS, E. Hydrobiol. 157: 525-533. - The aim of our study was to compare the longitudinal pattern of invertebrate EPTC (Ephemeroptera-Plecoptera-Trichoptera-Coleoptera) taxa richness and fish species richness, at the Adour-Garonne drainage basin scale (SW France). We considered 177 sampling sites for invertebrates and 109 sampling sites for fish, spread over the whole stream system. The statistical treatment consisted in simple linear regressions including bootstrap simulations, performed between the logarithm of EPTC taxa or fish species richness and the logarithm of the distance from the source. The model obtained for EPTC fitted a parabola with a maximal taxa richness in the intermediate part of the river continuum, while the model obtained for fish corresponded to a linear increase in species richness with the distance from the source. This difference in spatial distribution pattern is discussed with respect to the benthic nature of invertebrates vs. the pelagic nature of most fish species. REZBANYAI-RESER, L. (2001): Tributaries, sediment sources, and the longitudinal organisation of macroinvertebrate fauna along river systems. - Can. J. Fish. Aquat. Sci. 58: 824-840. Tributary confluences are sites along a main channel where, because of the introduction of water and (or) sediment, the water volume, bed sediment character, and water quality of the mainstream can change abruptly. These shifts ensure that abiotic gradients seldom vary smoothly or continuously for distances of more than 10 super(0)-10 super(2) km along any river system. The ways in which tributaries and related sediment recruitment points structure longitudinal changes in physical habitat are examined. Variables of importance to stream biota are affected and, in turn, it is suggested that the arrangement of tributaries and related features is an important control on the longitudinal organisation of macroinvertebrate benthos at moderate spatial scales. A new model is presented that stresses the importance of hydrological and sedimentological networks for organising lotic fauna. The link discontinuity concept emphasises the discontinuous nature of lotic ecosystem gradients, addresses the importance of tributaries in unregulated as well as regulated rivers, and extends, to its logical conclusion, the limited recognition of tributary influence in the river continuum concept. A case study from British Columbia, Canada, illustrates the general merit of the new model.*Plecoptera* RICHARDS, C., HOST, G.E. & ARTHUR, J.W. (2001): Life cycle phenology of common detritivores from a temperate rainforest stream. - Hydrobiologia, vol. 455: 87-95. The timing of life cycles, including growth rates, was determined for eight common species of detritivorous insects in a second-order stream in southwestern British Columbia, Canada. Six of the species ( Zapada cinctipes, Z. haysi, Malenka californica, M. cornuta, Capnia sp., and Lepidostoma roafi) had simple, univoltine life cycles. The leuctrid stonefly Despaxia augusta has a 2-year life cycle, with an apparent egg diapause of about 6 months. The chironomid Brillia retifinis produced at least three generations per year. The major growth periods for the set of species considered here span the entire year. Adults of several species exhibited seasonal declines in size at emergence, but one species had larger adults as the emergence period proceeded. Closely related taxa had more similar life cycle timing than more distantly related species suggesting a degree of phylogenetic constraint in phenology of their life cycles. The influence of the timing of leaf drop on timing of life cycles for these animals does not fit with proposed scenarios based on fast and slow leaf processing rates. RICHARDSON, J.S. (2001): Summer food habits of Harlequin Ducks in eastern North America. - Wilson Bulletin 113(1): 78-84.. Abstract: We collected feces of breeding Harlequin Ducks (Histrionicus histrionicus) from interior rivers of Northern Quebec, Labrador and Newfoundland to document their summer food habits. We obtained 42 samples from 50 ducks. All samples contained recognizable food items, and the mean number of taxa identified per sample was 3.6 (SD = 1.6, range = 1-7). Overall, a total of 10,222 organisms from 25 taxa were identified. Nearly all (99.7%) food items were insects; the rest were mollusks and mites. Among insects, Simuliidae larvae were the most common food item, representing 87.2% of all prey counted. Other insects had low relative frequencies, the highest being Trichoptera with only 8.0%. However, in terms of frequency of occurrence, many insects were well represented: Trichoptera (83.3%), Ephemeroptera (64.3%), Diptera (61.9%), Plecoptera (33.3%), Coleoptera (11.9%), and Heteroptera (9.5%). Although Simuliidae larvae may represent the most important food taken in terms of absolute numbers, the relative importance of Trichoptera may be much higher in terms dry weight. These results are consistent with observations that Harlequin Ducks usually feed on the bed of fast stretches of rivers, and occasionally in slow-moving waters. ROBERTSON, D.J. (2002): Seasonal patterns in macroinvertebrate drift and seston transport in streams of an alpine glacial flood plain. - Freshwat. Biol. 47: 985- 993. 1. We measured drift of macroinvertebrates and organic matter in five different channel types (upper and lower main channel, intermittent side-channel, side-slope tributary, and a groundwater channel) draining a glacial flood plain in the Swiss Alps. Samples were collected seasonally over 3 years (May 1997 to November 1999) to encompass major periods of floodplain expansion and contraction. 2. Total wetted channel length ranged from ltoreq 5 km during maximum floodplain contraction to gtoreq 24 km under system expansion. Principal components analysis (PCA) of key physical and chemical measures collected over an annual cycle showed that the main and side channel sites differed spatially and seasonally from the tributary and groundwater sites, reflecting the glacial influence on the former. 3. Two-way ANOVA indicated a significant Site X Date interaction for all measured variables. Transported organic matter, caused by blooms of Hydrurus foetidus, was typically five to 10 times higher in the lower main channel and side-channel than the other channel types, and was least variable among dates in the groundwater and tributary channels. 4. The number of drifting macroinvertebrates was usually highest in the groundwater channel, although highly variable among years. Other channel types had highest drift rates in November and lowest rates in May, reflecting seasonal changes in the life cycles of particular taxa, such as Baetis alpinus and the Simuliidae. The lower main channel exhibited the greatest, and the groundwater the lowest, seasonality in drift compared with the other channels. 5. The Chironomidae displayed the highest drift rates in most seasons, especially in summer when other taxa were relatively low in the drift. The number of taxain the drift also varied among channel types and season, ranging from less than two in early spring to four to six in other seasons. 6. The observed differences in drift rate and transported organic matter among channel types and seasons have important implications for ecosystem dynamics, through its effect, for instance, on dispersal among channel types or on organic matter exchange. (2002): Use of physical, chemical, and biological indices to assess impacts of contaminants and physical habitat alteration in urban streams. - Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry 21(6): 1156-1167. Human activities in urban areas can lead to both chemical pollution and physical alteration of stream habitats. The evaluation of ecological impacts on urban streams can be problematic where both types of degradation occur. Effects of contaminants, for example, may be masked if stream channelization, loss of riparian vegetation, or other physical stressors exert comparable or larger influences. In the Aberjona watershed (near Boston, MA, USA), we used physical, chemical, and biological indices to discern the relative impacts of physical and chemical stressors. We used standard protocols for assessing the biological condition of low-gradient streams, sampling macroinvertebrate communities from several different habitat types (e.g., overhanging bank vegetation, undercut bank roots, and vegetation on rocks). We strengthened the linkage between chemical exposure and macroinvertebrate response by measuring metal concentrations not only in sediments from the stream bottom but also in the vegetative habitats where the macroinvertebrates were sampled. Linear regression analysis indicated that biological condition was significantly dependent (95% confidence level) on contaminants in vegetative habitats, but not on contaminants in sediments from the stream bottom. Biological condition was also significantly dependent on physical habitat quality; regression analysis on both contaminants and physical quality yielded the best regression model (r2 = 0.49). Similar biological impairment was observed at sites with severe contamination or physical impairment or with moderate chemical and physical impairment. These results have implications for the management of urban streams. ROGOZ, I. The morphology of ovaries, oviducts and egg capsules in four species of euholognathan stoneflies was investigated. The characteristic features found were as follows: (i) numerous, long ovarioles, that open individually to the extensively folded, lateral oviducts; (ii) a thin, morphologically undifferentiated chorion; (iii) a thick gelatinous layer (extrachorion) which acts as an adhesive layer fixing the eggs to the substrate. Additionally, in the larval ovariole of Leuctra sp. the terminal filament anlage and clusters of germ cells have been found. These observations are in agreement with the classification of stonefly ovaries as primary (true) panoistic. ROSCISZEWSKA, E. (2001): Development of macroinvertebrate-based index for bioassessment of Idaho rivers. - Environmental Management 27(4): 627-636. AB: Theoretical constructs, such as the river continuum concept, predict that the composition of benthic fauna in rivers will be different from that of headwater streams. There exists a need to modify, for use on larger rivers, the bioassessment techniques commonly used on small streams. Using aquatic macroinvertebrates and the "reference condition" approach, we developed and tested a multimetric index for use on the rivers of Idaho. Reference sites were selected to represent the best current conditions (i.e., least impacted) among Idaho rivers. The index performed well in distinguishing reference sites from sites displaying some form of anthropogenic impairment. Individual metrics used in the index included: Number of EPT taxa, total number of taxa, percent dominant taxon, percent Elmidae, and percent predators. The index we developed for Idaho rivers was essentially a modification of a framework designed for small streams, suggesting that techniques, including data analysis, currently used for streams can be adapted for use on larger rivers. Adapting these methods for use in rivers is primarily a matter of (1) selecting metrics relevant to the rivers of interest; (2) expanding the field sampling to encompass the greater habitat area and, potentially, heterogeneity of rivers; and (3) selecting an appropriate form of data analysis. The approach we describe here should be applicable to geographic regions other than Idaho. Keyword: plecopterans (Plecoptera) RUDOW, W. (1878): Fam. B. Perlidae. (2001): Numerical and per capita responses to species loss: Mechanisms maintaining ecosystem function in a community of stream insect detritivores. - Oikos 93(2): 221-234. Abstract: We experimentally reduced the diversity of detritivorous stream insects in field enclosures, and measured the effects on an ecosystem function, processing of leaf litter. Two dominant species were removed separately, the stonefly Pteronarcys californica and the caddisfly Lepidostoma unicolor. In principle, processing could be maintained after species loss in two ways: the remaining species could increase their rates of shredding (per capita response), or they could increase in abundance (numerical response). We imposed a numerical response in some treatments by experimentally increasing abundances of either all the remaining species or the other dominant species so that expected metabolic capacity of the assemblage returned to full-diversity levels. Numerical responses were generally effective in maintaining leaf breakdown when either Lepidostoma or Pteronarcys was removed, except that the treatment in which Lepidostoma was replaced by an equivalent metabolic capacity of all remaining species showed less leaf loss than the full-diversity treatment. Per capita responses by other species appeared effective in compensating for the removal of Pteronarcys (although there were other explanations) but were not effective in compensating for the removal of Lepidostoma. In summary, the consequences of reduced biodiversity varied with which species was lost and how the remainder responded. Thus there was no simple relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. However, when numerical or per capita compensation does occur, stability of function should rise with diversity in such "interactive" assemblages. RUFFIEUX, L.; ÉLOUARD, J.-M.; SARTORI, M.
