The Indian Business Context : A “Bottom of the Pyramid” Emerging Economy, Technology and Innovation

Introduction:

The Bottom of the Pyramid (BoP) has emerged as a dominant concept in business, propelled by C.K Prahalad’s “The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid”. The BoP is the largest, but poorest socio- economic group. India in particular has created a mark on the global map with the concept and has been successful in changing the perception of India from a manufacturing and back-end process hub to a research and innovation Hub. The Indian and Multinational corporations have not only limited innovative solutions for the Indian market but are now taking these innovations to international platform and are treating India as a BoP Innovation and Research Hub.

Course Objective:

The objective of the course is to provide the participants an insight to the operation of the Indian Economy. The analysis would include the stratification of the Indian Economy and the performance of the productive sectors. This will include the problems and the prospects of the economy as one of the significant emerging economy globally.

Methodology: The course will be delivered through lectures as per the sessions listed above. The participants are expected to read all the background reading materials provided to them from time to time before coming to class so that they can effectively participate in classroom discussion. It is expected that all participants must sufficiently be knowledgeable enough to discuss meaningfully. Much of the learning shall come from classroom discussions, hence attendance in all classes is mandatory.

Apart from the usual classroom teachings, the participants would be exposed to real life environment of India pertaining to the Indian economic environment. At the completion of such field exposure(s) the participants will have to prepare a report to be presented in the class. For this purpose the participants will be divided into small groups consisting of 5-6 members.

Evaluation Pattern: The overall grade for the course will be determined by the following components:

Quiz - 10 marks Assignments - 20 marks Total - 30 marks
