Dear Parents/Guardians and 8th Grade Science Students,
Hello and welcome to a new and exciting school year! This year we will be studying as well as learning about several new and exciting topics such as astronomy and weather, chemistry, the mechanics of physics, and environmental science. As we are covering each of these units, we will be discovering lots of new information, in addition to fine-tuning our observation skills, organizational skills and developing our sense of responsibility.
Expectations We are going to have an positive and successful school year. In order to do so, we will have to implement a great deal of respect within our classroom. Having respect for our peers, our surroundings, and ourselves will enable us to make our learning enjoyable and meaningful. Also, we must remember to be safe, courteous, and responsible.
Supplies The following supplies are needed for this year’s science class and should be brought to class daily:
science section within a 3- ring loose leaf, lined paper binder or a science binder 3 section dividers (Drills, Classwork, pocket folder (for Tests & Quizzes) Homework) writing pens & pencils highlighter
Students must bring their notebooks or science section and a writing utensil to each class. All work should be completed in dark blue and black ink or pencil only. Students need to bring their agenda books for writing down assignments and important dates.
Grading Policy Per the Baltimore County Public Schools student evaluation policy, student grades will be calculated as follows: Classwork 60% Assessment 30% Homework 10%
Late Work Being responsible and organized are two characteristics that will help students succeed both in and out of this classroom. Therefore, homework and classwork assignments are due on the assigned date. Late work turned in the next class period (remember that’s two days later) will be marked down two letter grades. If a student gives me the work that was due on a particular day, later that day or the next day when they don’t have me – I will take off only one letter grade and grade it as I normally would. Note: There are some assignments that will not be accepted late. (i.e. ones we correct together as a class) Missed Days/Make-Up Work Students are responsible for work missed due to any absence from class. This includes a student’s absence from school or absence from part or all of class due to illness, early dismissal, late arrival, rehearsals, nurse visits, trips and other excused absences.
Make-up assignments must be submitted within the same amount of days as the absence. For example, if a student is absent for 2 class periods, then he/she will have 2 class periods to make up the work. Furthermore, if an assignment is given prior to the absence and due on the day of the absence, then the student is expected to have the work on the day that they return. It is the student’s responsibility to collect work and arrange a time with me to discuss any questions/concerns.
Looking forward to a great year!
