Well records tumbled in November at our club with 82 Budgerigars benched on the night, this is the biggest number of budgerigars I have even seen at any club table show in the SQBBA at a general club meeting, well done to everybody, congratulations to the winners, an excellent club result. Your support throughout 2014 has been phenomenal and it is a credit to you all, every single member of our great club the “Australian Budgerigar Society Inc.”. A Big “THANK YOU” to Mr. Charlie Chiang a new member of our great club for judging our table show, we had over 40 budgerigars on the night. Well done everybody, congratulations to the winners. This impressive number of budgerigars being benched at every meeting now allows everybody to talk and discuss their budgies with the judge and talk to their friends about their super budgies, how the breeding year is going and problems they may be encountering.

Charlie a picture of concentration during judging of our table show in January, and Cheryl making sure the whole night runs smoothly as usual. The picture gives us a true representation of the overwhelming support the club has received over the last 9 months, with over 356 budgerigars benched in the last 9 months it speaks volumes for the efforts all club members have put in to make our table shows one of the biggest supported in South East Queensland, well done everybody and don’t forget to bring your birds along to our next table show in February. Table shows make a great stepping stone to club shows and condition your budgerigars to all the aspects of showing. “STARS OF THE SHOW” January commences the start of all the SQBBA clubs Annual Shows for 2015, with the extended breeding season during 2014 the Black rung young birds are in abundance at all shows, Pine Rivers had over 620 entries, Caboolture 373 and Brisbane and Northern Suburbs with over 500, all have been strong shows in both quality and numbers and the ABS Inc. members have been supporting all these shows, well done to everybody.

What a month January has proven to be, our members have consistently been amongst the winners, we have had stars everywhere at all the shows. Here are some of the more recent achievements by our members, CONGRATULATIONS to everybody that has had success. You all continue to place yourselves in very high regard in the budgerigar fancy in South Queensland, keep up the good work.

General Meeting January 2015 What a general meeting for the Australian Budgerigar Society to see out 2014 on a high, and what a high it was with over 43 members present and 82 budgerigars entered into our table show what else could be said except that it was a superb way to end 2014. Our club has enjoyed tremendous success during 2014, our membership has grown, results on the show bench for all of our members has been exciting and through every one of our general club meetings our membership has learnt more about the hobby they love because we have been able to provide excellent guest speakers that continue to grow your knowledge about the budgerigar fancy. In 2015 we have already secured some prominent budgerigar fanciers, judges and experts in the field of veterinary science to continue on with the good work of 2014 and continue providing our club with these discussions and seminars at every club general meetings which are so important for everybody. PREPARATION OF YOUR BIRDS FOR THE NATIONALS

1. Work on a time line back from the National Show, work on 12 weeks, this year the start date is the 28/3/2015. Aim for completion to be as close to the SQBBA pre-selection show (11 weeks), you have 1 week spare for contingencies.

2. Select the birds you want to prepare from the 21/3/2015, if you are not confident, ask for another breeder’s opinion. Make the following notes so you can keep records on the progress of your birds and what utensils do we need to use:

Cocks Hens Variety Variety Ring # Ring # Tails removed/cut Tails removed/cut Growth Growth Flights removed/cut Flights/removed/cut Growth Growth Spots removed Spots removed Growth Growth Food Food

Do you put your birds into holding cages or work on them from the flights?

3. Work begins, tails first, books say allow 6-8 weeks, but from experience allow 8-10 weeks, you’re aiming to have tails dropped or pulled by the 11/4/2015 two weeks after assessment of your national candidates. Cut tails from the 28/3/15 if you do not want to pull, leave it 5cm long. Depending on how old the tail is, check the blood in the quill. If you have blood, this is a new tail and possibly still growing, do not remove, and work on only removing the dry quill tail only. By cutting you give the bird a chance to lose this tail naturally. If the tail has not dropped by the 11/4/2015 then you have to remove it. Do not remove new tails growing. What is the most common fault with condition of birds leading up to the Nationals? Tails falling out!

4. Baycox’ a 2 day program on the weekend of the 11th/12th of April, ideally should be every 3 weeks. To prevent coccidiosis. Take water away early to ensure drinking, when water is replaced at lunch time, do the same for worming.

5. On the 11/4 Check problem flights, I tend to remove only the last 2-3, flight numbers six, seven and eight, I also cut these so the birds will loose them naturally. Cut and leave 4cmon the 11/4. Check to see if tails have started growing. Books suggest 4-6 weeks to grow flights, experience indicates 5-7 weeks to grow, less for flights 1-5.

6. Remove flights up to 1-2 weeks after cutting (18/4 or 25/4/2015). Be careful here when removing. You now have 8 weeks to the Nationals. 1 week extra allowed.

7. Worm Birds, a 2 day treatment, week commencing 25/4/2015. How are tails growing, how are flights growing? Growth; assist by applying paraffin oil and or Vaseline. Extra dipping of tails/flights in water also promotes growth faster, up to a ½ an inch more can be added in the same time frame. Do not spray on wet days! 8. Commence 3 week dipping process, 2/5, 9/5 and 16/5. All birds get dipped. 10ml of ivomec per litre of water, use a 4ltr ice cream container, 2 litres of this mixture is sufficient in the container. Must be 3 weekends in a row, 7 days apart. This will also assist feather growth and feather condition of your budgerigars.

9. Depending on weather, winter is looming and birds tend to go into a terrible moult, how can you assist there dietary needs. You need to increase protein. I started rolled oats in 2011, as this is one of the highest protein foods available to birds. Greens, vegetables and fruit can cause havoc when you get closer to grooming your birds for pre-selections. Reduce these now. Start protein from4/4/2015. Spray your birds on sunny days not wet or overcast days!!!

10. Spots, remove 9/5/2015. Will take 3-5 weeks to regrow depending on feather of birds. Books say 2 weeks, I have allowed 6 weeks, feather on English birds are different, longer and wider, require more time to grow. What after tails and flights is the next most disappointing item not to have completed on your show birds??

11. Time for baycox again, 2 day treatment, week commencing 2/5/2015.

12. Remember you have already adding to your spraying routine by completely dipping your show team. Spraying starts from the 25/4/2015 giving you 7 weeks, as you get closer to the pre-selection, the spraying goes from heavy to a mist. Use hot water to begin, in the 2 weeks closer to the preselection use cold water.

13. Week commencing 23/5/2015 worm your birds again for 2 days.

14. From 25/5/2015; start spraying with cold water, not hot; remember the spraying is less heavy now, mainly a mist. Two weeks to Pre-selection, 3 to National Show. Start to open pin feathers and remove wax slowly from flight and tail regrowth.

15. Week commencing 1st of June wash and rinse your birds in warm water with no more tears shampoo. Open pin feathers where showing all over bird. Clean blood off from washing using full cream milk. Use corn flower in head and body to absorb blood, this will dry and dissipate within 1-1.5 hours maximum or sooner depending on weather conditions. You will/may need to wash again closer to your club pre selection show and again prior to the SQBBA preselection show.

16. Assess you team. On the 13/6/2015, final preparation is now completed, your club pre-selection awaits, wash and rinse again; for the SQBBA preselection use a feather on the morning of the show and spread paraffin oil on the bird’s feet and beak. Do not remove spots as the careers will prepare birds selected to compete at the Nationals. Pack you team into the car and good luck at the pre selection show.

If you require further information on removing/cutting or the growth of flights, tails or spots on you show team I would only be too happy to assist. Blood feathers, pin feathers can cause problems I will explain and show you how to use full cream milk, corn flower, shampoo and rinsing to remedy a problem prior to any preselection. I can also assist on opening pin feathers, tail and flight feathers if required. What I have listed above is a process of preparing budgerigars for a National Show, it has worked for me, you do not have to use this, but I hope you can all take something from this information. Please call me if you require further information or displays on the above information listed, I will be happy to help you.

The Australian Budgerigar Society Silent Auction The Australian Budgerigar Society Inc. Silent Auction was on Sunday the 18th of January. We received tremendous support from the Budgerigar fancy for our auction with over 34 exhibitors entering over 285 Budgerigars for our auction. We received numerous compliments from all that attended, everybody was overwhelmed by the selection of homemade food available from our Chef at Café ABS. Everybody was extremely happy and somewhat amazed at the sheer speed at which the auction proceeded. Members from Toowoomba were home by 4pm which they tell me was unheard of. Apart from the super quality budgerigars on offer including the rare White Face (sea foam) from Mr. Kevin O’Callaghan, our trade table was stocked with everything you require for your stud. The raffles were amazing Thanks MUM, Cheryl and our entire club volunteers you all did a superb job to help make the day run smooth. We were closing the doors and leaving the hall at 3:10pm so even though it was an early start we made it home in good time. From all reports this was the most successful auction that we have ever had, CONGRATULATIONS ALL ABS MEMBERS YOU MADE THIS HAPPEN YOU ALL PLAYED A PART.

Early selections start as members walk through the auction budgerigars during the viewing time. Getting more serious about the budgerigars you really are chasing is Len Bartz and Kev Campbell.

More pictures of the auction day. Take special note of the Transfer Cage on the right hand side that David Pendergast and the Pendergast family has donated to our club for all future club events.
