Title Replace faulty petrochemical wellhead equipment

Level 4 Credits 8

Purpose This unit standard applies to operational activities carried out on producing wellheads.

People credited with this unit standard are able to: establish the symptoms and causes of petrochemical wellhead faults; prepare for the removal and dismantling of petrochemical wellhead items and components; remove petrochemical wellhead items and components; arrange for the repair of petrochemical wellhead items and components; replace and commission petrochemical wellhead components and component parts; assemble repaired and replacement petrochemical wellhead components and component parts; and adjust and test petrochemical wellhead component parts in restored equipment.

Explanatory notes

1 Performance of the outcomes of this unit standard must comply with relevant site requirements, manufacturer’s recommendations, instructions of the assigned company engineer, and the following legislation: Health and Safety at Work Act 2015; Resource Management Act 1991.

2 This unit standard is intended for, but is not limited to, workplace assessment. While all evidence requirements must be met, it is noted that all range statements within this unit standard are indicative and dependent on enterprise and site specific equipment, procedures, and practices.

3 This unit standard applies to wellhead equipment above the master shut off valve on the Christmas tree.

4 Definition Site requirements mean the site specific documented methods for performing work activities and include health, safety, environmental, and quality management requirements. They may refer to manuals, codes of practice, or policy statements.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Establish the symptoms and causes of petrochemical wellhead faults.

Range three faults.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Any reported symptoms of faults are verified without delay in accordance with site requirements.

1.2 Preliminary checks and tests are completed to establish the causes of faults.

Range may include but is not limited to – breakdown, deviation, continuous, intermittent.

1.3 Consequences of faults are identified in relation to plant efficiency.

Range immediate, long term.

1.4 Information concerning the symptoms and cause of faults is effectively communicated to appropriate personnel in accordance with site requirements.

Range oral, written, electronic.

Outcome 2

Prepare for the removal and dismantling of petrochemical wellhead items and components.

Range three items and/or components.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Authorisation procedures and instructions of the assigned company engineer are located and referenced.

Range instructions, drawings, specifications, authorisations, safety.

2.2 Health and safety requirements for the removal of items are described in accordance with site and legislative requirements.

2.3 Resources are selected prior to commencement of maintenance activity.

Range tools, equipment, auxiliary services, materials, personnel.

2.4 Ancillary services to facilitate the removal of items and components are agreed upon with the assigned company engineer and consequent requirements are coordinated with appropriate service people in accordance with site requirements.

Range lifting equipment, access equipment, support services.

2.5 Checks carried out to ensure that tools, materials, and equipment fit the specified purpose are described in accordance with site requirements.

2.6 Isolations to complete the activity are carried out and checked to ensure compliance with site requirements.

Outcome 3

Remove petrochemical wellhead items and components.

Range three items and/or components.

Evidence requirements

3.1 Disconnection of items and components minimises downtime and disruption to production schedules and complies with instructions of the assigned company engineer.

3.2 The removal of items minimises downtime and disruption to production schedules.

3.3 Removed items and components are identified, cleaned, transferred, and stored in a safe, secure manner in accordance with site requirements and manufacturer’s recommendations.

3.4 Site procedures for the housekeeping of the work area are followed.

3.5 Communication is maintained with appropriate personnel during maintenance operations in accordance with site requirements.

Range process personnel, maintenance personnel, services personnel, maintenance supervision.

3.6 The release of substances to the environment during maintenance activity is minimised in accordance with site and legislative requirements.

Outcome 4

Arrange for the repair of petrochemical wellhead items and components.

Evidence requirements

4.1 Documentation, for guidance and reporting purposes, is assembled in accordance with site requirements.

Range manufacturer’s information and recommendations, service manuals, maintenance records.

4.2 Where required, repair advice or assistance is obtained from the manufacturer in accordance with site requirements.

4.3 Specialist repairer is informed of requirements and timeframes in accordance with site requirements.

Range calibration.

4.4 Despatch and delivery details are recorded and confirmed with repairer in accordance with site requirements.

4.5 Repaired equipment is checked when received and confirmed as being operational in accordance with site requirements.

Outcome 5

Replace petrochemical wellhead components and component parts.

Evidence requirements

5.1 Ancillary services are coordinated to facilitate the replacement in accordance with site requirements.

Range lifting equipment, access equipment, transport.

5.2 Tools and equipment are used safely in accordance with site requirements.

5.3 Workplace procedures to confirm that replacement parts meet the specification are located and used.

5.4 Action to be taken in the event of specified replacements not being available is identified in accordance with site requirements.

5.5 Components and component parts are cleaned and protected in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

5.6 Components and component parts are fitted to wellhead specification in accordance with site requirements.

5.7 Site procedures for the housekeeping of the work area are explained and followed.

5.8 Communication is maintained with appropriate personnel during replacement operations in accordance with site requirements.

Outcome 6

Assemble repaired and replacement petrochemical wellhead components and component parts.

Range three components and/or component parts.

Evidence requirements

6.1 The work instructions of the assigned company engineer are complied with.

6.2 Repaired and replacement parts used for assembly are accurately identified, cleaned, and verified as being fit for purpose in accordance with site requirements and manufacturer’s recommendations.

6.3 Tools selected for assembly are used safely in accordance with site requirements.

6.4 Repaired and replacement parts are assembled to wellhead specification.

Outcome 7

Adjust and test petrochemical wellhead component parts in restored equipment.

Evidence requirements

7.1 Adjustments are made to the restored equipment to ensure it is compatible with wellhead processes.

7.2 Methods of testing restored equipment are located and used.

Range observation, test equipment.

7.3 Test equipment required for job at hand is identified.

Range pressure, temperature, flow.

7.4 Tests related to the equipment are completed throughout assembly and reinstatement.

7.5 Equipment restoration documentation and test records are completed in accordance with site requirements.
