Experience / Cruising, Chartering & Courses (All charters skippered by Jim Krause)

June – August 2014 (2 months) We spent most of the summer sailing and cruising around Lake Huron and the North Channel aboard Traumfanger, our 37’ Bavaria. Passengers/friends included Mark Longacre and Krista Detor. We took Carrol Krause to Mackinac Island for Labor Day weekend.

May – August 2013 (2.5 months) Commissioned “Traumfanger”, a Bavaria 37 purchased in Cleveland. We started with a shakedown cruise to Port Clinton. We then sailed across Lake Erie, and up the Detroit/St Claire Rivers to Port Huron, MI. Crossed Lake Huron from Port Huron to Tobermory in a single 30-hour overnight sail (coincidentally timed with the solstice). Sailed/cruised around Lake Huron and the North Channel for the rest of the summer.

July 21 – August 3, 2007 (two weeks) Destination: Desolation Sound, BC. via San Juan Islands, the Gulf Islands, the Sunshine Coast and back again. Boat: 34’ Bavaria “Firefly” From: San Juan Sailing, Bellingham, WA Sailing with: my wife, Anne Hurley Notes: On this trip we traveled approximately 400 miles. The winds were fickle providing some great days of sailing and others most suitable for motoring. Fortunately the two times we had to cross the Strait of Georgia we had excellent winds. Putting out of Bellingham, we stopped at Stuart Island for the first night. We cleared customs in Sydney the next day and sailed onto Montague Harbor in the Gulf Islands. We timed our approach for slack tide to sail through Dodd Narrow to Nanaimo. Then it was over to Pender Harbor for a night and then onto Lund for the next night. We had three days in Desolation Sound before heading back south. With little to no wind, we motored an entire day, going from Desolation Sound to the delightful town of Gibson’s Landing. That day we covered approximately 100 statute miles in about 12 hours. We time saved from the long day provided us with three final days in the San Juan Islands.

July 28 – August 4, 2006 Destination: Lake Michigan, Leelanau Peninsula, Lake Charlevoix, & Petoskey Boat: 34’ Catalina “Splash Dance” From: Bay Breeze Yacht Charters, Traverse City, MI Sailing with: my wife, Anne Hurley & Mark Longacre Notes: Good cruising grounds. We had a chance to explore Lake Charlevoix, which scenic and a delight to sail on. Anchoring off of the State Park beach gave us a chance to hike the shore, swim and get a break from the heat. We had nice sailing conditions with the exception of Tuesday & Wednesday, when a series of sever storms blew through. We were safely tucked into Petoskey harbor and enjoyed the view from there.

July 24 – 31, 2005 Destination: Coastal Maine. Departed from Rockland, sailed to North Haven, Eggemoggin Reach, Center Harbor, Isla au Haut & Vinalhaven. Boat: Hunter 295 “Exit” From: Johanson Boatworks, Rockland ME Sailing with: my wife, Anne Hurley Notes: Incredible cruising grounds with many wonderful anchorages. Notable stops include: Holbrook Island, Eggemoggin Reach, the Wooden Boat School, Isle Au Haut & North Haven. Beware the lobster pots when motoring. There are literally millions. When sailing our keel slid right over them.
