Reading/Vocabulary 3 CC 3445 2:30-3:35 – Solomon Fall 2014

Background: Upper beginner/ Intermediate level students, mostly 17-25, in the US to study English intensively in order to complete a 4-year or Master’s degree. The students are in class four hours a day, taking grammar, writing, reading and vocabulary, and listening and speaking skills. The objectives for this course are reading comprehension skills and learning academic vocabulary. The students currently cover one reading chapter a week and are tested on Mondays on a related, but new, reading passage and the vocabulary for the chapter. The Reading and Vocabulary Final is on Monday, November 24th so the students have finished the last chapter in the textbook and are reviewing for the final.

Lesson plan:

Timed Reading: Practicing a variety of reading skills with different articles from a variety of sources – I often use IP news, interesting articles from magazines or newspapers, or online items. This one today will focus on vocabulary in context, fact or opinion, inferences, main ideas and keeping events in order. – handout

Go over Chapter 8 Reading and Vocabulary Test – this will focus on “why” something is the correct answer.

Skimming and Scanning practice – hand out
