P&S Faculty Advisory Board Meeting 10/31/12
Participants: Stefan Flores, Peggy Tseng, Nick White, Angelina Gomes, Matthew Lee, Alexander Bandin, Paco Kang, Dr. Mellman, Dr. Haddad, Dr. Lefkowitch, Dr. Devlin, Dr. Lewis, Dr. P. Spitalnik, Dr. Armstrong-Coben, Dr. Hripcsak, Dr. Loeb, Dr. Dickstein, Staci Ripkey, Arianis Batista, Lola Grillo, Mack Brickley, James Marvel, Rosemarie Scilipoti, Maggie Gordon
Introduction: Introduction of Peggy Tseng, P&S Club President, along with Stefan Flores and two first year representatives, Alexander Bandin and Alexander Sisti, and new Faculty Advisory Board members: Dr. Devlin, Dr. Spitalnik, Dr, Amiel, and Dr. Hutcherson, Introduction of Maggie Gordon, P&S Club Graduate Intern
Student Club Presentations: Triathlon Club presentation by Lola Grillo o Swim at Riverbank Park, bike in Central Park/NJ, run around the city o Team dinners twice a semester o Competitions around the city o New race jerseys o Mostly P&S students, but open to all CUMC P-SOOP (Physicians and Surgeons Outdoor Orientation Program): program within Wilderness Medicine Club presentation by James Marvel and Mack Brickley o Worked w/ admissions to gauge interest among admitted students o Spring training trip for leaders during Memorial Day Weekend (Harriman State Park) . Established protocols and leader training o Fall P-SOOP trip (13 participants and six leaders) in the Catskills o Three night/four day trip, cut short to two night/three day . Overwhelmingly positive feedback . Pre-orientation . Possible for Dental students to join the trip next year as well o Future plans . Expand numbers (participants and leaders) . More rigorous spring training program, incorporate more wildness medicine . Lower costs ($175/person) . Gear independence
Old Business: Orientation o Parents day orientation in lieu of parent’s day for first year o CUMC Kick-Off Party – new this year . All CUMC schools attended, fabulous event at armory . Food, potato sack races, DJ, dance lessons . Maybe combine club fair w/ CUMC Kick-Off Party? Club Fair o Well-attended and most clubs were there to represent their organizations o Possibly moving to two levels/spaces for next year to decrease crowding
New Business: Fall Fund Appeal o Outsourcing the Fall fund appeal mailing assembly to Columbia Morningside Mailroom o Students wouldn’t then be able to add personalized notes Club Leader Transitions o Happening in early January Club Evaluation o Number of clubs sustainable? o Maybe we are nearing the limit o How many clubs can we fund? . We will further consider this Re-integration of Club Leaders after MCY o We will have an event in March to reintroduce 2014 into P&S Club
Director Update: Rosemarie will send out 2012-2013 budget updates soon
Upcoming Events: BHP Fall show “My Favorite Year” on Thursday November 1st at 8pm, Friday November 2nd at 8pm, Saturday, November 3rd at 2pm and 8pm 30th Annual Dr. John C. Wood Memorial Rugby Tournament – Saturday, November 3rd from 11pm – 6pm at Columbia Baker field Musical Monday – Monday November 19th at 6pm Dance Showcase December 7th and 8th
